its not a car, its a boat. but it has a chevy 350 in it and transmission, and the transmission will go into drive but when you shift it into reverse the engine dies. do you think it would be the tourqe converter or what would it be? any clues would be helpful thanks.

There nornally is no TC in a boat drive. Something in the unit is locking up in reverse, not good news.

do u think it might need a whole new tranny?

Is it a prop drive or a jet drive? If it's a prop, and it's locking up, it could be in the transmission. If it's a jet drive, the jet drive itself might be causing the problem - I am not sure if these are designed to run in reverse.

Does the engine just simply stop, or kinda fade out (as if it's stalling)?

this problem is usually the shift cable binding or the shift cable ignition cutout switch.... when going from fwd to reversre the engine must be cutout when changing directions....this should be seen when observing tach as a sudden drop in rpm when changing from fwd to reverse...what outdrive mercrusier..

Don't jump to too many conclusions. Volvo Penta drives also use small block Chevy engines, and they do not interrupt ignition to shift ranges. They use a friction ring mechanism similar to an Auburn "posi" rear axle to smooth engagement.

Many Berkeley pumps also used SBCs, but the pump only runs in one direction while the thrust reverser plate is simply dropped down over the pump outlet to reverse the direction of the discharge flow.

In any case, it's probably a safe guess that the torque converter is not a problem.

yes i agree that! with the limited info as to exactly what this person owns i guessed that this problem was like my problem and my fellow boaters...

volvo is the best.....smooth operation..
