Ok so I'm going to be installing XM in a project car that I'm doing but I really dont want to put the antenna outside on the body because on my last car it screwed up the paint really bad. So I was thinking about putting on the front of the dashboard right under the windshield, I know that in the instructions it says not to, but this piece is all metal and I really dont understand why I could not. Any ideas on this?

A guy i work with put one on his dash his beamer. To keep from scratching the paint i cut some 1/8" rubber to the same shape and everytime i wash the truck i clean under it. No scratches. I move it every month over an inch to keep the paint from fading.

the antenna uses the roof as a ground plane, I don't think it will work nearly as well if you mount it on the dash.

Actually the bottom of the antenna doesnt touch the metal it has small rubber feet, very small. But i think i get what your saying paul. One of the kits i got said to mount it to a 6"x6" piece of sheet metal if you want to mount it on the dash.

the antenna does not have to make physical contact for the ground plane thing to work. The dash is also located inside if a metal cage, the roof might block some of the signal.
