Engine swap

85 camaro 5 spd with 2.8 started a real nasty pinging today on the highway. Thinkn it's bad bearing or rods but looking to drop something bigger in her. will any chevy smallblock fit into the existing mounts without mods? I was thinking about keepn cost low in just replacing it with a rebuilt 2.8 to allow for the same trans. However will any motor out of a firebird or camaro from 82 to 92 fit?

If you're thinking about replacing the engine with the same one I would consider going to one of the big auto part manufacturers such as Advance Auto, Pepboys, etc...They sell rebuilt engines which they guarantee and they come with a warranty...and the price might not be too bad Good Luck....were u using synthetic fluid and changing your oil regularly? I used to have the 3.1 and I used to punish it every day with no ill effect..
