I'm stumped.

So here at Hess where I live, Premium gas is at 4 bucks a gallon. Sadly, that's too much, and the mild wasn't any better. So my LT1 had to suffer the "regular" fate as it's all I could afford.

But wait a minute. With the regular, I'm getting less backfires, than with premium, and the performance feels slightly better.

I don't get it. What's up with that?! That defies all logic.

No, it doesn't. To understand why, you need to know just what 'octane' means, and how it affects gasoline performance in various cars.

In general, the higher the octane rating, the lower the ability of the fuel to 'detonate', along with this comes a slight loss in the 'will to burn', meaning it takes more to get a certain burn with higher octane. So, while higher octane gasoline can help prevent detonation issues in hot running or high compression engines, it does not have quite the 'will to burn' that 'lower grade' gasolines have.

Always run the lowest octane rating you can get by with. If you aren't detonating with 87 octane, you're throwing your money away by running premium.

I would have to agree to that. I just built a 509HP small block Ford engine for my 68 Mustang and I am able to run 87 octane by manipulating the timing a bit. I built the engine with a 9.1 compression ratio but run a radical cam, heavily ported heads, Victor Jr. intake, with a 650 double pump Holley. I have a 4.11 rear gear ratio, competition prepped full reverse pattern C-4 with a 4400 converter. Runs 11.80's at 114mph. I specifically built this combination to have the ability to run 87 octane. I jack the timing up a little and run 92 octane at the track. My question is, how do you post a new thread on this site. Obviously I'm new here, and haven't been able to find the way to post a new thread. Help!

It's in the main section (Chevrolet/Caprice, Ford/Mustang etc).

Back up one from this page you're looking at right now. Now about a inch above Silicon's "Read This" post you'll find the "New Thread" button.
