help w/ the jetta "curse"

most everybody I know around me that has/had a jetta has had this problem: the side strips have fallen off the doors leaving an ungodly looking door.
Just curious as to if anybody knows what is the best way to put these strips back on without a huge mess. I've heard a few options being double-sided 3M tape and/or gorilla glue.
if anybody can help me out I'd greatly appreciate it!
