WIP: Revell 99 Silverado CK

Hello again,

So, while I´m waiting for that doomed Mobil1 NSX (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=901194) I decided to get this build going for a model meet we will have in Campinas - Brazil in mid August. So technically this is my 2nd kit.

This is the kit (http://www.revell.com/catalog/products/1_25th_Scale_99_Chevy_Silverado_Pickup-981-5.html), which I found it all very nice.

I actually like the chromed parts but there´s something really weird with the wheels...I don´t know they look way too small...

First off, lesson well learned, all parts sealed with a plastic sealant (is that right?) directly from a spray can:

After that dried out for some 6 hours I primed them all but forgot to take pictures at that time :screwy: this is the only one:

Couldn´t really find any major issues with the body at this stage...what a joy ! Nice one Revell !

I left the body inside my paint booth for 3 days so it was well dry and give it a light sand with some sanding sponges I found at the hardware store.

Next I started the first mist coats with my airbrush, loads of them. This is my first time with automotive paints and I am hooked right from the first spray test, really easy...very toxic :icon16: :iceslolan so a good respirator and gloves and etc are a MUST !

It dries to the touch quite quickly but even after a bunch of wet coats it doesn´t shine. I found out that´s because is a basecoat and will require a clear coat to shine...as told by the salesman :uhoh:. But I´m very happy anyway.

Obviously I messed up at some stage..lots of them...dust landing in the body, flying particles only visible when they set on...and the most amazing one, dropping the body while admiring your last wet coat:banghead:.

So sand away, polish, sand more, polish more...those split seconds of stupidity lead to hours of forced hard labor. Ah...lessons of a lifetime...

But I managed to get it more or less in a good shape, I really really hope I don´t mess up polishing it before the clear coat:

Next the engine !

OK, now the engine got somewhat assembled, painted, light wash & drybrush (first time on those techniques, really fun).

And I gave a shot at the chassis underside, picked some bolts and dry-brushed randomly:

All these techniques we found in this forum are so cool, thanks all of you who share, makes this hobby so much fun.

Well, that´s it for now, those where produced in the past 2 weeks, since this week will be a short one here with Thursday being a holiday and work allowing some updates might pop-up. Really looking forward to them!

Hi, looking good so far. A few things that might help you out:

The front parts and exhaust manifolds on the engine are not chrome on the real vehicle. Of course you can keep them that way if you like, but it is better realism to paint them aluminum.

The "back door" part is called a "tailgate."

Well...if I tell no one would believe me...but another body ruined...another in the mail :runaround:...

To keep the spirits up, I continue with the engine and interior...

The little white dot is a slice of streched sprue I did just to see how it goes...so cool to play with sprue and a flame!

And for the first time I´m going to attempt to make some wiring to an engine. I gave a little wash and dry brushed some spots, it is amazing how these small pieces come to life with those techniques, even for me since I have NO artistic skills at all.

As you can see, the thickest wire is a sort of "convulted wire" and it was done using the amazing technique described by Alex (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=905115)(924_CarreraGTS). Eventhough I got the wires in the wrong order...and I did have pictures :rofl:...I was fairly pleased with the final results.

The wires are 0,5mm solder painted with flat black enamel. The convulted thing I did using a piece of the very thin wire that comes in coaxial cables wrapped around a lenght of a thicker wire.

And since the batteries on my camera just died, the interior pics is up next!

As you can see the glass in the panel is probably bulletproof and could take an AK47 burst at close range...

Maybe I should have painted the edges black?

Small but it is an update...I was able to save the body this time, reprimed and repainted. So now I have another full Silverado...Believe it or not I´m now buying 2 of the kits I want to build :icon16:. I´ve decided not to even open the single ones.

Last time I messed up in the clear coats, this time I am pleased with the results so far.

Since this is actually my first kit in 10 years and is the first time I tried automotive paint and 2K automotive clear, after all screwing up I got from reprimed, repainted and recoated in 3 days.

I must get this done by saturday or I´ll miss the meet in the city I live.

Only polishing left now!

There are some "dust spots" that I´ll try to get rid of.

Hopefully the door handles and other body trim will be painted flat black, and a wash in the panel lines.

The subtle washes,right stance,flat black was beautifully applied,and it's very shiny! This will surely stand out!

I think that is kind of late to suggest you this,but you could have done some light sanding to the tires to make them a little more real...

Or maybe they just have 'Pneu Pretinho' applied to them :rolleyes:

I did sand with a very coarse grit the threads, it´s not very visible in the pictures, actually I liked the "pneu pretinho" look, I want to put this on a very small diorama depicting a used "for sale" truck, let´s see how this evolves...
