What makes you think it's the ingniter? I had one fail, made the engine crack and bang, firing all over the place all the time. This could be the ignition module. Don't know about the black smoke though, could be unburned fuel causing this, is it backfiring?

check fuel regulator, check the coil, check the pickup in the distributor, the ignitor is the module, also check for good grounds or erratic grounds that break contact or make poor contact when they get hot

Ok, I learn something new every day. The box of tricks a top the coil is the ignition module. I thought the pickup in the distributor was the module due to the fact they are expensive items.

My car has the some problem and I was wondering if you had found a solution yet? I had changed the coil already and I have not changed the ignition module. Was this the solution?
