A 3.1L V6 (Pontiac Transport)engine is nearly a direct replacement for the 2.8L Fiero engine.

As Old Lar said... There's more, though. The 3.1 MUST be a front-wheel drive block. The RWD block will NOT "fit". It's okay, the vast majority are FWD. Early '90s Grand Prix is a good source.
The aluminum heads will not fit in the Fiero chaissis without MAJOR reconfiguration. The iron heads on the Fiero now are the same part number and casting as the iron heads used on 3.1. If your short block comes fom an aluminum-headed engine, the pistons need to be changed to get the compression back up to "stock".
I've done several of these engines for Fieros. They REALLY like 'em. Use Melling MTC-5 for a cam. Not too rowdy, but will enhance the power across the range. I install them 2 degrees "retard" (offset cam key). Comp offers Magnum "roller tipped" rockers. A good addition.
Larger valves, a little porting, as with any other engine, will make a significant difference in performance.
You will be very impressed with the change in "character" of the car. It drives more like a "muscle car" (lots of low-end, strong "pull"). Of couse, it won't be a "giant killer", so don't expect 13 second 1/4 mile times... (:-

can you tell me what a good cold compression would be for a 82 v6.. the one i have is out of a 82 pontiac citation. the compression is sitting at an average of 150psi. because i want to put it in my 85 fiero. also what should a guy be looking for to see if its a good engine for a car. thanks

The earlier engines (pre-86) had smaller main journals than the later ones. The '82 X-body (Citation, Phoenix, etc.) unless the "hot rod" version, had smaller valve heads, as well. Probably best to leave that one alone.
