Alternator

The D-series alternator will fit a B won't it? Would rather find this out before I go attempt to find out the hard way.

No sir it will not. I tried and failed miserably. The d alt has the mounts in a straight line if you were to draw an axis through the alt. The B alternator has the mounts offset. What this does is move it farther out away from the engine and the pulley. I even ground out the mounts on the d alt and adjuster bracket to the limits of the metal to try and get some tension on the belt but to no avail..it was just loosely rubbing on the pulley. To kick the whole thing off it turned out that I was using a BAD d series alternator as well! So even after all the hard work the damned thing still didnt work. And with my jg edelbrock manifold I had to take the wheel off and pull the alternator out through the bottom AFTER taking off the bracket..4 times. I ended up getting my b alt rebrushed for 20 bucks and pumping out 175 amps. /rant. I suppose it MAY work if you get a much smaller belt but I believe you still need to modify the bracket if memory serves because the d alt is taller.

I'm already using a small belt, which with the B-series alternator, puts it almost at the engine, because I'm running the CTR pulley and ended up getting a short belt....but I might have a B-series alternator laying around here somewhere...I just know for sure I have plenty of d-series alternators...right now I'm flat broke, so I can't go get another alternator and I need my car.

I drove home tonight without any lights most of the way...and what was funny, was on one of the roads I drove right by a cop without lights, while my friend was following me with just one headlight and no tags, lol.

Well I found another b-series alternator, but #1: bent pulley(fixable with the other pulley) #2: Square plug rather than round(can probably fix, but don't want to)

After looking at the 2 alternators(just eyeballing), you are correct on the mounts. In overall size, the D is much smaller, but it seems the height is the same. The difference is on the top mount: the B mounts in front of the bracket and uses both a nut and bolt, the D mounts behind the bracket with just a bolt, the top mount is threaded.

I can make it work, and most likely will have to. Hopefully I won't have any issues with the little D keeping up with the B, especially since I have no accessories other than a radio with 1 speaker.

The output is the same, or only slightly different. So dont worry about that. And yeah, its been so long I forgot how many differences there were with the top mount.

Ok, wasn't an alternator problem, I broke part of my wire connecting to the fuse box.

But for future reference: A D-series alternator will fit a B-series engine. Only modification other than the belt is you need to take the alternator bracket off and drill out the hole closest to the slide. I just used a 15/32" bit I had and worked perfect. The belt I have does sit the alternator at its max, but the belt is tight. Can't remember the belt size, but won't help unless you have a CTR pulley also.
