Can I get away with putting Plus-grade gas in my 2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V rather than the "recommended" premium without doing any damage?

yes you can, but be ready for a drop in performance. thats about it.

id also take care of those butterfly screws and get rid of that damned precat imo.

How significant of a drop are we talking about here?
And why do you suggest I take care of those things as well? Would downgrading fuels cause those problems to surface if they haven't already?

no, they wouldnt. the butterflys are a common problem on the 2002-2006 se-r's and spec-v's. this is where the unreliable 'qr' comes into play, along with a failing pre-cat.

to answer your octane question, from 87-91. this was taken from a board that i frequent quite a bit, b15sentra.net. there are discussions about this day and night. from what i understand, the same qr25de that is in the 2.5 altima, is the same motor exactly in the spec -v. same compression, same everything. the reason for a higher hp rating is the exhaust system. some spec manuals say it requires 91. some say 87. its a mix and match. choose one. if you want it to run a little sluggish and want to save 5 bucks, go with 87 octane. if you can afford the 5 bucks and not buy 5 bucks of junk food, get the 91. thats just my opinion though. personally i would go with the higher octane, and save yourself from unnessisary coffee/energy drinks in the morning :)

well 4 points rating on a octane level is NOT going to make a significant difference in burning nor detonation. SCC (Sport compact car magazine) did a science test and engine test to actual cars. from 87 to 89 nothing changed, 87 to 91 nothing significant changed. So in reality, the reason why people use 91 octane is for the reason of thats the lowest the car requires whether it be a high performance car or has a forced induction integrated.
