I had the same issue with my 97, it is the same set up. take the molding off, then the plate underneath. Just spray some clear silicone lube in it, then move the gear shifter back and forth several times. Spray more if you need it. I did this once and it has never made the noise since.

It's probably coke syrup in the wheel that rolls and makes the shifter stop in a certain position. It makes the little wheel stick so it squeaks when you move it. I prefer to fix the problem rather than cover it up with silicone. Remove the console cover- remove console liner and pull up around the top of the cup holder. This is easier if the cup holder is pulled out. It will pull completely out of the car. Watch the heated seat switch if you have one. Then unclip the plastic piece around the shifter itself and lift up (this will not come out of the car). You can twist this piece and you will see a little metal arm coming from the back side of the shifter with a little white plastic thing on the end that goes over some ridges. There is a little bolt that holds this plastic thing on the metal arm. Undo it and remove the plastic piece. You will probably see some sort of sticky residue in it. It is best to clean it with alcohol since alcohol will break down the sugar. You can lube it after you clean it to help it roll but it moves very easily when clean. Reinstall the roller back on the arm. It can only go on one way so no worries there. You want to slide out the lettered plastic beside the shifter while you have the piece out of the car and clean it. You will find a lot of buildup around all the edges normally. You may also find some items that you lost while your cup holder was open. I found like ten lighters in mine. lol

Sorry I did not say to clean it. I kinda thought that cleaning the part first would be an obvious thing to do before spraying the silicone on it.
