Brake Change/Questions

Hey all!

I took my 04 Silverado in today to get a rotation/balance and asked the guys if they could check my brakes while they were at it and let me know what they were looking like.

I've always changed my own brake pads, but haven't done so yet on this truck.

I have 4 wheel disc brakes, which should make it easy, right? Drums are a pain.

Anyway, they said the front brakes were good, but the rear brakes were almost out. Is this normal?
I guess this could be explained by some new front pads being installed before I bought the truck (at 33k miles) but lets say that didn't happen. Is it normal for the rear brakes to wear more than the front? It's usually the other way around, isn't it? :screwy:

OK, that aside, I'm going to have to change them anway.
Being this my first time changing pads on a Silverado, is there anything I should know before I start?

Hello Talie,u are correct saying front wear before back on a disc/drum set up
but not to sure on a disc/disc set up.any way if ur familar with disc its pretty much the same.atleast in my exper.the pistons push in without turning because the E-Brake doesnt operate through calipers.it should have a shoe set up for e-brake behind the rotor. Good Luck

on my 2000 silverado the rears failed after 20,000mi....this is because in the rust belt the defective caliper pins/rubber seals get damaged by road salts.....since i had enough of gm's b/s i then made changes to the pins diameter and boot design...i now get 50,ooomi on rear pads,,,the front pads were replaced at 90,000mi and still had 30% of pad left....


on all my vehicles with 4 wheel disc the rear wears out first, but i apply brakes slowly and avoid slaming the brake on hard to stop at the last moment...


if you find the new pads binding file the metal pad backing edges also so that they slide easy....oem pads are 120.oo/set....
