So I started at around 2pm and just before 4 I had the old baby out..its was so easy and smooth. I was completely alone for half the day.

(radiator, battery and battery tray out)

(I had to take the oldie out titanic style lol, it was at an even greater angle than this to clear the ac lines that I was NOT going to remove)

((ITS OUT! Even after the lift dug into the dirt and threatened to tip..and took 20 mins of inching with a prybar to get it away from the car. Overall there is not much at all connected to these things.)

The quickly growing engine garden. Theres My car, the new Y8 swinging tantalizingly close ot being put in. In the foreground my friends supercharged miata that just got the block dropped in after wearing the rings out on the stocker. then another miata engine decorating the landscape..with 2 more miatas and 2 626 turbo sedans behind me.

(how I finished the day off. Had to get to the car meet for some grub. Still left to do is the wiring harness dpfi conversion and obd1 conversion. And engine bay cleaning. Installing the mounts onto the right engine and dropping her in.

Will be done tomorrow..or im screwed for work at night lol.

Aatr you at the junkyard doing this :p

haha...so I'm not the only one that will do an engine swap the day before you have to be at work...Just make sure no valves are bent before you drop it :)

Yeah. Thats one of the only things worrying me. I bought it with the clear understanding that it was a great running engine. But it needed a timing belt because the one on it was used from a junkyard (who the hell does that?). After trying for 2 days to get the crank pulley off I find that the timing belt has about 15 teeth munched off. Some friends speculate we may have done that while trying to get the pulley off but im not sure. How hard should a cam be to turn?

Tony

Shouldn't be that hard to turn, just a little resistance from the valves, but if its barely turning, that is the same boat I was in.

Did the crank pulley have the big hex around the bolt? If so, they make a tool for that...which I finally broke down and bought one because I need it too often with all the motors I have laying around.

Yeah it does have the hex. But it was late, I was cheap and I will only need it this once..hopefully. I used two flywheel bolts and blocked them up with a wrench against the block to hold the pulley still while I climbed on top of a breaker with a 4ft cheater...then hopped up and down.

Also. Today I spent the whole day cutting my harness. Extending wires and adding injectors. I gave up late tonight after I got to the distributor wiring and realized there were two white wires. My frazzled brain snapped and I couldn't find anything that gave me comfort to move forward any further.

After I gave up and went home I found what I was looking for..although its still not completely assuring. Everything I read says to match all of the colors except for one of the white wires (I can tell them apart now since inside the loom 4 of them are grouped while the igniter is alone and unwrapped). However...with both the 88-91 civic service manual and the 92-95 open in front of me I notice that the tdc sensor is the only thing thta matches color wise. The Cyl sensor and CK sensor are opposite color wise on the distributor. Which is why I gave up because I didn't want to go soldering them until I was sure. I guess im just going to match all of the colors and hope its right..even though im getting my info from at least 3 write ups and a company's installation instructions that all say its right. The factory manual says it isnt.

The only reason I went ahead and borrowed the tool rather than keep borrowing one was 2 out of 3 z6s have that pulley and my CTR pulley on my B18 is the same. The first z6 engine I bought, I started tearing down to rebuild....i got stopped at the crank pulley because I couldn't find any way to hold the crank still.

I cant help you much on your wiring, just because I had issues with my MPFI to begin with, lol...and I haven't done an OBD1 swap yet. The new ED I got probably will end up OBD1 though.

Well. The engine is in. Had to do it twice though since the inserts fell out of the rear mount. And somehow the mount got bent a tiny bit and so the nut wanted to cross thread and the bolt wouldnt go in no matter how hard I tried. Since I didnt have a c clamp to squeeze the bracket together to line up the nut and bolt. I instead put a smaller bolt through the hole and threaded a nut onto that and clamped it together. Debating whether to take it out and try again with the normal one or leave it..as it looks fine. Engine harness is in but I still need to add two injectors and the cyl sensor wires. And also wire up the 4 wire o2 sensor and vtec stuff. That comes tomorrow morning.

I tried to start it tonight..didnt go so well. The coil was bad and so was the ignitor. Replaced it with parts from the original dizzy and now it fires. But it wont run. It sounds like its trying but just wont go. It sputters and pops and will sometimes shoot fireballs out the header and once the intake manifold. I still dont have the vtec solenoid, vtec press sensor, the IAT or the o2 sensor hooked up. But it should still start right? I tried playing with the timing but nothing there would work. I have codes for those sensors that are unhooked, and none for anything else so it leads me to believe that it should start. There was one split second just before I killed it once where it purred for about 1/4 of a second and sounded clean. Im still trying to figure out what went wrong. I know i need to clear the codes first but I was supposed to race the car sunday and wanted to make sure it would fire before I finished the job. Just figured it would run with codes. So far the jumper harness and mpfi swap seem to be all ok. I have fuel. I apparently have spark although I havent checked each plug yet.

Check your cam timing to be sure, I've had problems w/ that before, and also, since I just went through this 4 freakin times b/c I was getting impatient, check the firing order of your spark plug wires... you may have 2 switched, which will make it sound like a lawnmower if it runs at all...

I have been considering the cam timing for sure. Although I dunno how it could be wrong with how simple it was to set it. However I did it in about 5 mins so it could certainly be a tooth off, but I would hope itd still run.

I checked and double checked my firing order. 1-3-4-2. clockwise on the dizzy. No.1 plug bottom left of the distr. if the square side is facing up.

So im a huge moron... My firing order is off. Just double checked the cylinder numbers and i had em backwards.. I read it 1-2-3-4 left to right..its right to left. No wonder my dizzy seemed like it was 180 deg off. Even though it cant physically go 180 because of the offset grooves. Now im waiting on a ride to take me to fix it..at least I dotn have to get a new dizzy, I hope. they are like 200+ for a reman.

Check the Distributor King on Evay. I picked up my B-series dizzy for like $180 new not reman, and they use upgraded ignitors. Thats if you need a new one.

If that doesn't work, on your cam timing, are you using the two lines horizontal with the head or the one offset mark with the timing mark on the timing cover? I don't know if the Y8 is the same as the z6 on this, but I know on the Z6, you ignore the normal marks and use the single mark...which sucks if you don't have a back timing cover.

Its the two horizontal marks. See OT for results.

Told you it was the ignition... :P

Tony, even if you don't have the back cover, you can still set it relatively easily... just set it by the two horizontal marks, then roll it forward about 1/2 tooth... the tensioner will set it correctly from there.. I had to do that a few times w/ my friend's CRX b/c of a water pump that kept breakin timing belts.

Yea, I only had to deal with it one year. The 2 horizontal marks usually got me close, usually still had it off by a tooth even setting it forward a little. I now have the back covers, so no big deal.
