I've read countless reviews of people argueing the fact if it can be done. Some say yes, others say no. Is it possible? If so, what kind of mods would have to be done in order for it to work? wire harness? mounts? transmission?

You can fit a 3800 series II S/c'd motor in there. Someone even just got a northstar V8 in one too.
Custom motor mounts, a lot of re-wiring or a stand alone ecm, and there are a few different tranny options too

what do you think would be better performance/cost wise to do, 3400 or 3800?

3800 s/c FTW, if you can accomplish it.

They both require a lot of work to make them fit. If you have access to the 3800, i'd personally go that route.
