Is it necessary to remove the rack & pinion assembly to replace the inner tie rods on a 1996 Lumina? I was just viewing the online service guide on AutoZones website and it indicated to do so. If not, any words of wisdom for this job?
Thanks,
Steve

Nope, it doesn't have to be removed, as long as you have an inner tie rod rack tool to get at those inaccessible flats. If you don't have one you probably can rent one somewhere.

If you do some searching, you can find these kits (impact quality) online for only $25 shipped. Have fun removing the factory metal strap holding the boot on the rack.

Good, I was hoping the whole rack wouldn't have to be removed. Thanks for the information!
