I have a 97 Chevy K1500 with 105,000 miles on it. I used the think that my rear end was clunking but I am starting to think that its my A/T once in a while when it changes grears usually in the lower gears it will make a clunk type of noise. It seems to change gears just fine and runs great. I am just wanting to know if this is normal. I have had the truck for almost a year and its been like this for a while. I took it to Gm and they said the noise was normal. I am not sure if they told me that because I had just bought the truck from them. I have changed the fluids and fliter in both the A/T and the T/C. any help would be great. Thanks for your time

Transmission usuall do not make noises like that.
Can you feel slack when you let up and mash down on gas?

Look over driveshaft splines and U Joints and carriers real close.
Also check engine and transmission mounts and transmission mounting bolts to engine.
Also check rear end mounting and feel for slack on pinion shaft and spider gears and ring gear and drive shaft slack from forward to backward.

Well sounds like you have made my day. I don't ever feel any slack. I did have the Ujoints and all the good stuff looked at. it all seems to check out ok. So I just wanted to make sure that its all good before I make that long haul from Mt. Ok towing my wifes car. have a good day and thanks for the help!!

if you get a chance drop the drive shaft and pull the yoke out of the transfer case watch out for fluid comming out...put you some grease inside the yoke rub it in the splines..had a truck clunk many years ago do this....this took care of my problem for a while then when it comes back grease it again...dont know what makes the clunking noise i guess the splines but i ended up putting a zerk fitting in mine so i could grease it regularly...

Well you know I did that about 8 months ago. I used "red and tacky" and it worked out alright. I just wanted to make sure that its nothing that going to cause me to be sittin on the side of the road. I will grease it again though. thanks for the input. have a good day

well if the trans mount is not broken(check it)

and the fluid is bright red and smells like new fluid, and if the trans has less than about 130k on it originally or on a rebuild then i would run it and not worry

130k is the average life expectancy of this transmission, says the tranny shops, when i talked to them when i brought them the 4L60E out of a 97 ext cab c-1500 pickup last year to have it rebiult for the owner for 1100 bucks

good luck
