My engine does the 4-time knock even on a warm start now.I want to replace my main/crankshaft bearings both while I have a little extra money and before my engine locks up. How much would you charge someone to do it or how much would you pay someone to do it? $300.00???

you will need to take it to a machine shop after marking your main and rod caps and have the machine shop check and size your bearing journals and seet you up with the correct bearings and so on
the machine work alone will cost as much or more than a good used engine that you could find locally from someone
but at least if you put new bearings and rings and such in it it will be like new again
it may need to be bored if cylinder wall and piston wear is severe, in which cmmonly it is with engines in the condition yours sounds like
if you need any more info then lemme know
good luck

All I know about this scenario is that we are gonna more than likely going to install over-sized bearings and have the crank shaft taken down if need be, at least that's what he said. He said we wouldn't have to do anything to the top end of the engine.
ANy info you have time to type out about the scenario would be benifitial to me.
-Could you elaborate on the machine shop?
-What would I take to them?
-HOw do you know if you have cylinder/piston wear? The car runs fine, just a knock at start up.
