Oil Drain question from filter

Does anyone know (420a) how much oil will drain out if you take off the oil filter when cold without draining the oil pan first? Are we talking the whole amount or just a little bit? I'm not sure where the oil that flows through the filter is directly coming from to begin with. I basically just need to take off the filter, and save as much oil as possible and as quickly as possible (short on time). Thanks

Just as much as it does when you drain the pan. The filter housing sits above the oil level in the pan, so all that comes out is what's built up on top of the filter.

But I figure since the filter does sit above the pan that there would be a considerably less amount of oil. Not true?

He means that just as much oil will come out as if you where changing the oil and took the filter off. It wont be a huge amount but it will be some.

So like a quart? I'm just trying to figure out since I'm doing this at my place instead of my parents garage tomorrow and trying to use as little amount of everything as possible. plus I don't feel like buying 4 more quarts of oil (raising this months total to 13 quarts)

I would say you may lose a cup tops.

So when the car is off and sitting for a couple days, mostly all the oil eventually drains into the oil pan then right? Nothing stays up in the line going to the oil filter or anyplace else? Sorry for the idiot questions. Trying not to stain my car port too.

The oil filter will be full and some will be sitting on top of it but not a long should drain. Put a pan under the filter when you take it off and you will be fine.

Cut the bottom off of a gallon of milk and use that for a temporary catch pan. Unscrew the filter and just let it drop down into the jug and the remaining oil from above the filter should follow it into the jug, you shouldn't have any mess at all.
EDIT: Any why have you put so much oil in the car this month?

Cool. Sounds like I'll do that tomorrow then. I have my big catch bucket at my parents but I don't feel like getting it. It's full too lol
Regular oil change first. Installed sandwich adapter. Leaked all over so drained and redid it. Worked fine for a day, and now leaked on a 100 mile trip I took on Sunday. Blah. And now I have to do it again, but this time adapter is just coming out. I think I know why it's leaking... has very smooth sides which I think isn't sealing right. I sand papered one side to rough it up and seems to help some. I should gasket seal or something them too but not going to.

Sandwich adapter....hmmm...would that be something you could use as an oil feed for a turbo???

Jason, I was PMing you but then realized this may be useful to others.
I noticed you have a sandwich plate for your oil cooler. Has yours ever leaked? Block to sandwich is perfect, but its leaking from sandwich to filter. O-ring is oiled up nice and good but it's leaking only there. The filter is on as tight as it can go too. Any ideas. I'll probably be calling you when I get there so expect a ring.
Also, is the surface of the plate textured or 100% smooth or painted?

Well I pulled the filter last night and checked the sandwich for flatness. Totally flat. I put just the filter back on and cranked it over and ran it. I didn't have time to deal with the BS of playing around so left it as it. I looked under and it was still leaking from the top the filter. So, the problem apparently is the filter itself. I went to autozone and bought a Fram filter (always used Mobile 1) and put that on with the sandwich again. Didn't get a chance to run her last night since I wanted the thread lock to dry and it was pitch black by that time. So I hope my problem is solved. Kinda sad since it was a brand new filter too.
And to answer my original post about how much oil would pour from the oil filter without draining the pan... about a cups worth. Jay was right. I cut the top off a milk gallon and unscrewed it and let it fall in and it was barely anything.
