Engine I.D.

Purchased a used 3-cylinder Metro engine from a supplier in California and wanted to know if there is a way to identify the year this engine was manufactured? There are some subtle differences between the purchased engine and my original...crank pulley smaller, distributor looks "slightly" different. Thanks.

if it has a flat valve cover its 91 or older, fined cover is 92 and newer and 5 bolt front pulley is mid 94 and newer

Is yours a JDM engine from Japan? If so, all the external stuff will be different. You will only be using the block and head. Use your own pullies, intake, Distr etc...

If the new engine is one made for america or canada you can tell the year by looking at the number stamped on the engine. As you are loooking at the engine as if it it were in the car, the number is on the lower right hand part of it. Its about about the level of the oil filter but all the way to the right.

The number will be 10 digits

The first number will be G = egnine type
2,3 number will be 10 = displacement 1.0 L
4th number will be a letter = the model year (P=1993 etc)

last 6 digits are just a sequential number, they do not match the vin

Also if its a 4 bolt crank your eingine is 93 or older and 5 bolt cranks are 93 and newer.

Some of the older metros had vacuum controlled dist.

A 4 bolt crank will have different pullies and timing belt than a 5 bolt crank. You can use a 5 bolt into a 4 bolt or a 4 bolt into a 5 bolt, just swap
your pullies and sprockets.

This acdelco reman that I put in last year was a 4 bolt crank. Look at the number of holes in the crank sprocket:
