I love the dentist because he scares the crap out of the rest of my family, but for the last 18.5 years the worst thing he has done is a scale and clean.

I'm mutual on dentist's. I don't particulaly like them, but I don't hate them enuff to never get a checkout & risk having a cavity rot my whole mouth out.:toothless Whenever I go to my personal dentist, there's this cute asian girl who constanly talks while she's cleaning your teeth. Thing is, if she would just talk it'd be cool but she wants you to talk back while she has your mouth propped open.

The dentist is fine. I just don't really care for the pain that results from going to see him.

Just went to one last Thursday for the first time in about 5 years, and I'm going back this Thursday for some work (a root canal and a few cavities). I'm losing my job as of the 14th, so I'm trying to get as much done as I can before I lose my insurance.

Personally, I would have to say that I like the dentist. The particular one I'm going to is very good, and even though it wasn't the most pleasant experience, it's by far the best one I've ever had in the dentists office...

Good luck.

I HATE the dentist...actually, the dentist himself was fine, but I always got the bitchy hygenist who'd deliberately stab me, and then go "Oh, your gums are bleeding, you must not floss enough." She'd sit there jabbing her sharp implements up between my teeth and gums, as hard as she could. I haven't been to the dentist in about 2.5 years because of her, but I brush and floss and chew sugarfree gum constantly which they say is a good thing. I haven't had a single cavity since I started chewing gum, which is funny, because my baby teeth sucked. I had about 8 cavities in the baby teeth and only 1 in an adult tooth. Maybe fewer because the adult tooth one was from a sadist dentist who would always drill out twice the tooth that was necessary. He did my mom's wisdom teeth and spilled cavity filler in the holes, they didn't heal for 8 months.

That reminds me of another anti-dentist reason: I have 3 wisdom teeth and I like them. I have plenty of room in my mouth. I have gaps between most of my teeth. But I'm afraid some psycho dentist will try and pull my wisdom teeth.

All my dentists so far are crappy ones where there's no entertainment besides counting the ceiling bumps, but supposedly the ones here have TVs in the ceiling and stuff like that. I will go someday but not by myself.

Actually, the best experience I ever had was when I had my wisdom teeth yanked. I didn't feel a thing, it was great. And the weird thing is that ALL 4 of them were severly impacted, and they had to be drilled into pieces and then the pieces were picked out, pretty nasty, but didn't bother me at all... even while healing, they weren't too bad at all, I just took extra care with them.

Just went yesterday, had a root canal done and two temporary crowns. Pain pills were my friends last night, lol. I don't like to rinse my mouth when I'm out of the chair, because my mouth is numb and I can't feel the water dribbling down my chin until my shirt gets wet, LOL.

OK, update!! I actually went to a new dentist today, and they were pretty great! I got to watch The Little Mermaid (I haven't seen it in 12 years, OK :flipa: ) while they cleaned my teeth and nobody jabbed me on purpose. The best part, is that though I eat candy CONSTANTLY (seriously I'd say 1/4 to 1/3 of my daily calories are from candy) I still have NO cavities at all!! None!!! And thanks to Aetna, the whole visit is costing me nothing!!!

However I do have to go back next month, as it's time to have the wisdom teeth out. They do IV sedation so it should be fun. :bloated: Seriously I'm not too scared. Today wasn't anything I'd do for entertainment but I really didn't mind it terribly.
Try and guess which tooth needs to be pulled the worst:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/536231dentist.jpg

At least, I will be getting all 4 out at once while I'm still young, and the total cost to me will be $300.40. Not a bad deal. Thank you insurance!!!!

Oh, edit: I think part of why I have no cavities is that I'm ALWAYS chewing sugarfree gum, even when sleeping. The ADA actually recommends you chew sugarfree now to prevent decay. Funny because when I was little my parents didn't allow any gum or candy, and I had 8 fillings in my baby teeth. Now I consume TONS of gum and candy, and have good teeth. Who knew?

Ouch Boingo. The best experience I had in a dentists office was having my wisdom teeth out

Update from me too:

I got all my dental work finished up 2 weeks ago, and it was pretty good. I actually went in 6 different times, and they'd do a little bit of cleaning each time, and then fill some cavities if they had time. Turned out great, but there was one problem....

One day I went in to have my upper left quadrant cleaned, and they send me back with this little asian lady who seemed really nice, although with here accent, she was a bit hard to understand at times.

We made small talk, she asked me where I work, etc. etc. and she says: "you smoke?". I said yeah, I do. So she went off on a 15 minute diatribe about why smoking is bad for your teeth, which was informative and all, but my main concern is not my teeth when it comes to smoking.

After that was all over with, she notices the piercing in the back of my neck, and she freaks out. After she calms down she says: "You no get one in your tongue!" (which I've already got), but then she went off about how tongue piercings would destroy your teeth. This was funny because a few days earlier, I had actually asked the dentist about it, and he said he saw absolutely no damage from the piercing, and said it's not something I should worry about...

So, she shoots me up with Novicaine (or Lydicaine or whatever they use), and she gives me so much, my EYEBALL gets numb. But, she must have done it wrong because I can still feel her jabbing me with her metal instruments, so she has to shoot me up several more times. I think she jammed the needle into the roof of my mouth at one point, it hurt so bad.

She goes back to destroying my gums for a while, and then she starts talking about "satisfaction"... I have no idea what she's talking about, and I can't say anything anyways because she's got her meathooks in my mouth, so I just say "uh-huh" to whatever she says... She's saying things like "We look fo satisfaction in life" (Uh-huh) and "When you 26 you maybe not find it" (Uh-huh) and "Maybe when you older, like 30-someting or 40-someting, you find it" (Uh-huh) and this continues for several minutes, and I start to think that she's just giving me some sort of harmless pep-talk about life or something until she busts out with: "Jesus is the answer... You need to find Jesus".

Now, all due respect to anyone that's religious, but I am decidedly an atheist, and I don't appreciate being preached to (which she began to do at length at this point). And I couldn't say a damn thing about it...

So I'm sure she meant well and all, but I think that ultimately it will have the exactly opposite effect on me, kinda like aversion shock therapy. Now, when I think of Jesus, I'm going to associate it with horrible pain in my mouth and being brainwashed by some crazy lady with sharp tools.

If you read this entire post, then you have too much time on your hands... I just wrote it because I woke up really early and couldn't go back to sleep. But it's still true.

I see you understand why I avoided the dentist for 2+ years - I think that woman used to be a hygienist here.

A fascinating thread.

I used to get free dental as part of my military service package.I think the navy dentists were trained in a muffler shop. For about 10 years,I didn't visit the dentist at all after that, until the point where I couldn't handle the discomfort of all the cavities and collapsing Navy fillings. It was a major act of will power to go see a dentist, aqnd he took one look and referred me to the local hospital,as the cost of multiple extractions and repairs would have been prohibitively expensive.

Iwas fortunate enough to be accepted as a patient at the country's top training facility,University of Otago. They fixed me up very well, for very modest fees, and I have to say that a careful trainee beats an experienced but ignorant dentist every time.

but I still don't go unless I really have to!

My wife had emergency oral surgery on Tuesday. She had 5 teeth extracted; 4 wisdom teeth plus one badly decayed molar. We actually had the procedure planned for next week, but that bad tooth told her she couldn't wait that long...

She says her pain from the procedure is NOTHING compared to the pain of that bad tooth.
