3 bad coils?

My daughter has a 2002 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7 and she recently hit a deer. About 1 week after the front end work was completed it started running very rough. A local mechanic said 3 coils were bad. I didn't like the idea of 3 coils going bad at the same time so we got a second opinion. The next mechanic said the computer was bad and after replacing it the Jeep ran fine for about 2 weeks. The same thing has happened again and now this mechanic says there are 3 coils bad (all on the drivers side). I replaced one of the coils and nothing changed so I still doubt that all three are bad. I can remove the coil connectors on all 3 drivers side coils with no change in the engine so they are apparently not firing. Any ideas would be a great help.

Check for voltage at the coil connector with the engine cranking. If that is a two wire connector at the coil, one is B+ and the other is a switching ground. you can use a led testlite between the two terminals, crank the engine, the lite should pulse? If it pulses, that shows you have B+ and the computer is switching the ground, those two parts of the circuit should be ok.

I just had a similar situation with my 2004 Jeep Liberty V6. I hit a deer the first week of November 2010. Picked the Jeep up from the auto body and had to return it. First, it was 2 ignition coils. Then had to go back to shop for other 4 ignition coils. Idle is still much higher than it used to be and is a bit choppy.

Trying to determine what else is going on with the engine/electrical system. Interesting side note, the first time the Jeep went back in, the right brake lamp had to be replaced. A day later when it the rest of the coils went, the left brake lamp had to be replaced.

Any thoughts?

Front damage from a deer could cause the Air duct working going from your air cleaner to the Intake tobe damaged.

All Air is metered by the Massive Air Flow (MAF) sensor, and any unmetered air leaks could cause random misfires.
If the Massifve Air Flow(MAF) sensor damaged, it also could cause random misfires.

See if your Coils are bad, http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=905504

1) Visual inspect
2) Smoke test for unmetered air leaks.

If Catalytic converter was damaged during the accident, this could also cause random misfires.

You said u changed 1 coil and that didn't help. Well if 3 coils are bad fixing 1 won't help the others, u will need to change all 3 if it is the coils, check the plugs while u have the coils off to be safe.. this could be a simple plug coil issue or it could be something far worse.
