Need advice on how to paint a hippie van.

Hi, this is my first post on this forum.
Later this year I plan on buying a Ford E-350 and hippie-ing the crap out of it. My only concern is the paint job. I know I'm going to have to get the paint stripped, but I don't know what kind of paint to use for when I have an painting session with my artist buddies. Anybody know what the hippies used in the 60's?
