Supercharger Maintenance

Hey guys, me again.

Its come time for my yearly supercharger service. I recall Bob not long ago purchased the ZZP supercharger oil. Just was wondering if you recommend ZZP or GM?

Bob, how did you like the ZZP brand. I bet its nice that it comes in 6oz bottles instead of two 4 oz bottles.

What do you think? Can I run ZZP brand for a year?

Also for anyone who needs to change their Supercharger oil, there are perfect little spray bottles at Cub Foods near the hair care stuff. They are only like a dollar a piece, and seem like they would be perfect to use to pump out all that old supercharger oil. Then throw the bottle away. Plus they come in various colors.... pink, purple, green, blue, clear, you name it!!! HA HA

Hi Tim,

The ZZP stuff worked fine from what I can tell. As far as running any supercharger oil for a year that is no problem. One year was just my recommended interval or what I do and nothing written in stone.

Good suggestions and I recall one of our members posted a tech procedure at Tips & Maintenance so that should be helpful for the membership. But you can add to that thread as far as any helpful tips or suggestions, etc.

Alright cool, I think I'm gonna order it and try it out too.

Thanks Bob.

One more quick question, if I order a 180 stat to support a 3.5" pulley, will that set DTC (system not reaching operating temp) code?

How will a 3.5 pulley work with a zzp 1.0 pcm in the future?

BTW, I'm gonna change my supercharger oil every year like you do. There is no sense risking possible damage to a 2000.00 supercharger.

A 180 stat shouldn't cause any issues at all Tim. A 160 would unless you live in the desert Southwest or have a reprogrammed PCM. I don't own a GTP, so I'm not sure about the pulley/PCM question, but I'm sure Bob will know.

No problems with the 3.5" or higher (like stock 3.8") SC pulley with any Stage 1 PCM module Tim regardless of whether ZZP, DHP, Intense or Milzy. For example I have the DHP v1.0 in my Regal GS (L67) but no plans for a smaller SC pulley for now with the gas situation the way it is. Installed mainly for the improved fan turn on points, better shifting and no speed limiter. :grinyes: But my recommendation is to use a modular pulley system that way you can swap out the pulley in a very short period of time when needed or if you plan to upgrade to a smaller one but nothing less than 3.4" unless there are other supporting mods to include the new PCM.

alright thanks Rich! I just ordered all the stuff from ZZP. I recently had a MAF problem, so rather than buy the MAF, I bought the stage 1 t-body, and ever since its been installed when the outside temp is over 70, I get a little torque converter indecision. I have to order the MAF screen and re-install it from ZZP, I think thats my problem, everything else checks out. So thats why I kinda need to rush my order from ZZP. Before the temps here reach 70+ degrees, if that will ever happen. Thanks again for the info.

alright, good, thanks Bob. You must have posted while I was typing to Rich. Thanks for the heads up guys!!! Let you know how it goes.

Hey guys, what plugs would you recommend? One or two ranges colder?

Autolite plats/double plats?

ac delco's?

or NGK's?

Thanks!

I know what you're saying about the temps Tim. I live in Michigan, and it had been in the 70's for a couple of weeks, then the bottom fell out and we had a hard freeze warning for the Monday and Tuesday. I'd been riding the Harley every day, but had to go back to the car for the last couple of days. The stupid weathermen keep forcasting rain, and so far we haven't gotten any so I could have rode the bike. I should know better than to trust the (we're not sure)whether(it's gonna rain or not)men.

Hey guys, what plugs would you recommend? One or two ranges colder?

Your choice Tim. They all work. One range colder should be fine. I prefer the Autolite copper core since I change them out more frequently. One colder would be 605.

Thanks Bob, yeah, I think I will go with the cheapos mainly because I get bored every summer and change them frequently.

What are the heat ranges for NGK?

So, how many horses do you guys think I'll be pushing? 240 stock

-3.5" pulley
-stage 1 throttle body
-1 range colder plugs
-180 stat

Figure maybe 250-260 topps?

How much do you think my gas milage will hurt? Do you think I will really notice any difference if I dont boost?

I work 30 miles away, so 60 miles round trip per day. My car actually does really good. If I fill up and reset, it will get as high as 32-33 mpg.

Last time I filled up, I got up to 55mph, and reset just as I was coasting. I wish I had a camera because my DIC said 99.9mpg. If only that were accurate. It dropped quickly once I actually started to use the gas.

hey Bob, I found out that the AC delco 41-601 is the equivelant to the autolite 605. Does this sound correct? I'd like to keep the plugs ac-delco, but rather not risk having detonation. What do you think?

Doesn't ring a bell Tim. In reference to the OE Delco double platinum plugs we have this posted at Tips & Maintenance. See link below. Also, there is a one range colder AC Delco Iridium under the 41-101 Iridium but it is in an older thread so I'd have to look it up to be sure.

Update:

I found it. One range colder AC Delco Iridium is 41-985

Thanks for the info Bob, I really appreciate it. What about just regular copper core ac-delco's? could I use them in one range colder?

BNaylor

You mean like the old Delco R45 series? I've never used them except in my old Z28 with V8 5.7L engine so I don't know how they would perform in a SII 3800. The Autolite Copper Core is what I would use. Plus you can easily adjust the gap with no electrode issues like certain platinums and iridiums. Plus Wallyworld has them for about $4.00 a pair.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I'll just use the autolite 605's

Just to let you guys know, tomorrow is the scheduled deliver date for my parts from ZZP. As soon as I have a chance, I'll switch out the t-stat and the plugs before I put on the new pully. My friend said I could borrow his eaton m90 pulley puller, so I'll let you guys know how everything goes.

Alright, Job Done, all but for the pulley. I put in autolite 605's, a 180 stat, and changed supercharger oil. I'm just waiting to meet up with my friend to borrow his eaton m90 pulley puller.

Got any tutorials on how to swap over the supercharger pulley Bob? Doesnt look too had, just was wanting some guidance.

Also, whats the difference between autolite 104's and 605's? I see GTP guys running AL 104's. Just know nothing about them...

And man, I might add them plug wire boots were a beech to remove. I changed plugs and wires last summer (ac delco wires with 41-101's) and I even added a ton of die-electric grease. So much for that. The 41-101's already seemed wore out by my standards, the piece of platinum on the ground electrode was already gonezo. So, I think I'm just going to be buying the cheapos from now on be replacing them more often. My car seems to really like the AL 605's.

Also Bob... I replaced my MAF Screen, and the TCC indecision seems to have gone away. wierd isnt it?

Sounds good Tim. Each SC pulley puller is basically the same but with minor differences. Here is a guide from Pulley Boys which is the same puller I have.

The AL104 is the same plug but two ranges colder than stock. Depends on your pulley size and whether there is knock retard of concern.
