Overheating - Likely a bad cooling fan relay. Other players would be the engine temp sensor, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), or system wiring. First step would be connect the fans directly to the battery to make sure they work. They should come on when you turn on the A/C. Do they? If so the fans are good.
Door - ?
Shifting - If the Transmission Control Module (TCM) detects a fault in the transmission or it's sensors it will shift into second gear to prevent further damage. This is called the "limp mode". Are you seeing any other symptoms like erratic speedo or tach indications? This would indicate a bad sensor. Are you seeing a service engine light? This indicates a fault code is stored in the PCM. Either way, I would have AutoZone or a like store connect a scanner and see if any fault codes are stored. It's free. Make sure the fluid level is full. If you haven't changed the fluid and filter lately, have that done. Use only ATF-4 fluid.

On your door problem. When the gas door is open for fueling, it locks the left side door so it isn't onto the pump nozzle. Your fuel door is still in the open position. There should be a stem portion where it broke. Juse push it back in to release the lock. Hope this helps.
