I just installed a custom CAI on my 1990 Lude SI. Was just wondering if I should reset the ECU? A friend said that I should, so just wanted some opinions? If so what fuse do I pull to reset it, thanx!

resetting the ecuu will let the ecu reprogram itself and adjust to the modifications. you're letting more air into the engine and your ecu is programmed for much less air flow. reset it and it'll adjust for the increased air flow. i'm not sure what fuse to pull on your lude. on 5th gens it's the clock/radio fuse. but what you can do is just disconnect the positive terminal on the battery and leave off for 5 minutes. then just reconnect it.

thanx for the replys. I looked it up in my repair manual and found it to be the clock/radio fuse for the 3rd gen. Just wanted to say what a great site here very glad I stumbled upon it!!

You don’t need to reset your ECU if you’ve had your cai in for a long while. The ECU has a self learn mode and will eventually learn the new settings/values. The advantage of resetting it is to reset the values straight away rather than wait for it to do it slowly.

ooo, i see.... so 2 months is long enough for the ecu to already adjust itself? i wont need to reset it? maybe ill just do it to make sure....

Yup, there is no harm in doing it so go ahead.

question! i just took out my battery wire for like 15 mins, then put it back on. then i drove normally, but then i took it up close to redline in 2nd gear just to make it adjust itself. then i went normal speeds. is that bad?? did i mess up the learning mode, should i reset it again and drive normally or is it ok that i put it to redline. i thought putting it to redline might help the learning but im not sure.

once you start the car after resetting the computer will allow it to adjust. even just idling will do fine. no need to redline. dont' worry about it though.

the thing is, i already redlined like i said about. it wasnt asking what i should do in my previous post, its what i actually did. but i guess the computer can adjust itself even after redlining right? it should be ok anyway? keep in mind, i have obd1

Dame I can’t believe you did that!!!!! Hope you haven’t been driving it long after you did that coz it’s gonna make your car run way to lean messing up your engine!!!!!

Only joking dude, but you’re not supposed to rev the engine though. Once you reset the ECU turn the ignition on and let it idle for about 5 minutes, then turn it off (remember not to touch the accelerator). That’s it you’re good to go, hope this helps.

u got my scared when i read that first part!!! i drove my car and it seems to be more smooth but it may just be the placebo effect. so should i take off the black battery wire again for like 15 mins and plug it back in again? or its ok if i just leave it the way it is? i just hate putting all my settings back but i can deal. so basically what im asking is, leave it or reset it again?

Haha, sorry man couldn't resist. Nah leave it, it will adjust itself over time anyway. There are some values it resets straight away when you disconnect and reconnect the battery terminals, the rest will adjust eventually.

ive heard to either start the car right after u pull the fuse out or pull it out while its running
