Flushing Your Power Steering System

* You will need several quarts of power steering fluid, cheaper brands can be used for flushing, though a high quality GM approved fluid should be used when refilling.
You will need a large plastic container(old oil jug would work) to drain the oil fluid into.
You will need a long hose, 5-6 ft, pex tubing works well so you can see when the fluid runs clear , and a fitting of sorts to attach this hose to the low pressure line.
Should look something like this, but with a clamp where the red arrow is.
Obviously you can use any tubing, clear works best to see when it runs clear.

- For best flushing results the system should be flushed with seafoam trans/power steering flush or something simular. http://www.seafoamsales.com/transTuneTech.htm
- I usualy use about 1/2 the can(6 oz) before replacing pumps and R&P's, hoses also should be replaced if those were replaced(so you dont ruin more good parts & void warranties).
-- Flushing The System
- Attach the flush tubing to the low pressure hose , the smaller hose without the plastic protecter. Might need a clamp on the flush hose or low pressure hose if your fitting is to loose.

- Drop the other end into an old container.
- Something like this...

- Have 2-3 quarts of new power steering fluid ready.
- Begin to run the engine, slowly add the fluid into the reservour, trying not to let it run dry . It may help to have a helper.
- Reattach the low line to the pump inlet as it was before.
- Then refill the system and add the seafoam(or other brand of cleaner), run it just like the directions state.
- then you drain-flush the system again by attaching the flush hose into the low pressure side, and flush agian with 2-3 more quarts.
- Once the fluid runs clear out the drain into the container, you can refill with approved fluid and begin bleeding the system (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=674257).
