hi, 94 cherokee sport. lately theres been a rear clicking sound when taking off under a lot of acceleration. just giving her sum get up and go. but there is a loud clicking sound when you take off. its not noticable when you drive at the same speed. my brothers yjs front ujoints make a similar sound and his are completely gone. just wondering if thats the problem or if i should look sumwhere else. thanks.

It could be the U joints, or it might be as simple as a loose lug nut or a bad wheel stud.

Can you locate the noise more precisely?

Get under your jeep and grab hold of the rear driveshaft. Push left and right, up and down. There should be NO movement. Twist it back and forth, and there should be some movement as it engages the gears, but watch the U-joints specifically. They should be tight. If they are not, that is your problem. Thats where my bet is.

ok, got under there and no u joint movement in front or back. the shocks, springs, sway bar (coming off soon for lift kit) are all strong and no movement. it is really getting annoying and i hate everyone staring at the "beater" jeep. but could it be anything else? could it be something mechanical like engine damage, trans damage, or tc damage? it runs to good for me to think that its a mechanical problem. it sounds like its clanging against something. please let me know what you think. i also checked all lug nuts and no change.

Where is the noise coming from? Do a takeoff with someone standing next to the Jeep to locate the source of the noise more accurately.

It could also be your front driveshaft or your front axle joints. They should all have no play in them if good. Generally if you are hearing noises from the transfercase or differentials, it will be loud crunching noises where you have lost a tooth from a gear. Clicking under power is generally a driveline thing. Hmm, not sure what else to suggest.
