While driving my 96 Bonny, the check gages light comes on and then the car shuts off. I shut down, re start and the car starts with no problem. There is fuel in the car but it thinks it is empty. I keep the fuel at 1/2 tank thinking this will solve the problem but it happens any way. I have replace the fuel pump 3x in 2yrs. I dont know what to do!

Welcome to AF, this is a broad issue and can be caused by many things, does it happen slowing down, idling, acclerating, worse hot/cold? Try and narrow the symptoms for better answers.

It happens when I am driving, no certain time. (may be twice a week)The gas gage sometimes moves all over the place, therefor I keep it at 1/2 tank always. I will be just driving and the check gage (fuel) light will ding and the car will lock up. I just coast along until it stops, put it in park and restart the car, its starts up with no problem. It happened to my mother and she just put it in neutral and started it back up. Before it completely started cutting off the only time the check gage light dinged, was when I TRUELY was low on gas. It's like it thinks there is no gas in the car.
The very first time it happened, I was at a quater of a tank of gas, it freaked me out so I kept it at 1/2 tank. That worked for awhile (couple of weeks)until it did it at 1/2 tank, so I kept it past 1/2 tank. That was fine for awhile until it did it again, Then I kept it on full. Then it did it when it got around 1/2 tank (can't win to lose).
Now Iam keeping it at about 1/3 tank (just above the gray area on fuel picture) of gas, so far (about week) no CHECK GAGES LIGHT BINKING AND SHUTTING off. I was gonna replace the fuel pump again. (3x in 2yrs) but I dont think this is the problem. Any suggestions?

I's start out by cleaning and tightening the battery cables particularly the grounds. Then look at the ground buss junction in the harness under the l/s sill plate adjacent to the front seat, you will have to fold back the carpet and open the harness to access this, known area for corrosion it will kill the fuel pump.

I have the exact same problem on my 94 SSE Bonny. Driving down the road, usually under acceleration, and it quits. Put it in neutral, start it up, and away I go, service engine light on until I stop the engine.
Using my homemade OBD1-1/2 reader, or whatever it is, I find a stored DTC code of P0341.
The service manual says its got to do with the Computer(PCM), ignition module, cam sensor and crank sensor all working together. The service manual also talks about the intermittent issue (which is what we both have). They focus on the connections to the ignition module and the computer.
Now I just had another problem with my 94 beast and I did swap out the ignition module and the problem has been worst in the last couple days. Of course the ignition module is exposed to the elements.
So my next journey is to inspect all the wires and connectors in the plug that connects to the ignition module. Clean the connectors etc....anything. I will see what that does.
Checking the cam sensor plug and crank sensor plug(if you can get at it) may not be a bad idea also. They also live in a very hostile environment. I did change the cam sensor a while back but never could get to the crank sensor to change that.
If your are having problems with the engine quitting at idle speeds, change the idle air control value, worked for me.
