A/C & Heat control unit conversion

I have a '94 Lincoln Town Car Cartier.

The A/C & Heat control units in these cars are very well known for having thin and filmsy buttons that break. All of my buttons on mine are all broken.

So, I searched for a possible updated unit, and found a nice 1995 TC AC/Heat control unit. I installed it, and it lights up, but no heat and no A/C came out.

I called the dealer and they told me that literally, the '93 and '94 units were the only ones that couldn't be interchangeable. Is this true? The color of the bottom of the unit that goes inside the dash is white. The model # is: F4VH-19c933-AA with the EATC automatic temperature feature.

Please let me know if there is any other units I can install. I really don't care if it has automatic control... Just as long as it looks good & works good.

McGiver,

Thanks for your reply. It's the broken buttons that bothers me the most. The car is perfect in every way, except for these buttons. It makes the car look like junk in the inside. Besides, it was 49 degrees here in Indianapolis 2 nights ago, and I had to drive for 2 hours without heat. It was a shivering nightmare. :) The weather here changes really quickly. And it sure would be nice to have the A/C for the summer. I went without the A/C last summer with my old truck, and I said to myself "Never again".

I saw the "95 and newer" thread, all it says is that '95 and newer are better than older cars. There wasn't any information on the climate control unit in there. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I think your opening a can of worms trying to interface the new Control with a late model car.

I would really think about buying a new OE AC/HEAT control OFF of EBAY.

The Newer TC's are designed to operate controls with gloves on.

GOOD Luck!

MCGiver,

Thanks, much appreciated. It's been very hard to find one without the buttons broken. I saw one that had one button broken. Wasn't too thrilled about that... It was running at 130 or so when I looked at it. It must have ended in the 160's or so.

I called the dealer, and they quoted me $634 for a brand new unit. These guys (The Ford corporation) must be high on drugs. :(

I did contact Junkyard dog about the climate control unit. But, I didn't get a response from him.

Maybe JYD helping SCK38!

I will keep my eyes open for one and try to hunt one down.

Think of Crown-vic,Mercury Marques,Police Highway cruisers, and TC when looking for parts.

There's a Grave-yard of parts for these cars.

Hi you must have my message stuck in your junk mail box. I sent a reply. I haven't seen any of those units for the 93/ 94 models that didn't have the buttons cracked out. I've been looking for a repair kit with the replacement buttons for some time now. I haven't found one as of yet. People think I am on drugs for asking such questions. Some times I just want to slap those a**h****

MCGIVER,

Yeah, I've tried every search string I could think of. I'm actually very good at finding things, as I've worked on Antique garden tractors as a hobby for the past few years. Unfortunately, no matter how much time I spend looking for the unit, it seems that truly, the '93/'94 heat/ac controls are very rare. :( (Or at least rare in decent condition)

Mike,

Thanks, appreciate that. I didn't know that the PM system here had a junk box. :) I hear ya on the buttons. Considering the price on a new unit, ($634), they really should make a button replacement kit.

If my unit was functioning 100%, I would probably have considered buying some JB weld, fill in the holes, sand them flat and painted them black... The trick would be finding a way to put on decent lettering. I really don't want to do a hick job, but that seems like the route I might have to go, if I don't find an unit in good condition.

I saw a picture of a '94 Lincoln TC on ebay today that had a brand new unit that looked exactly like the original, had the exact same configuration and layout- the only difference was, the buttons were hardened and didn't have the filmsy ones in it. I e-mailed the seller and asked him how he did that. He said it came from a dealer for $450. It's less than the $634.00 I was originally quoted for the very original with the filmsy buttons. But it still is way expensive.

Here's the link to the auction with the brand new "updated original" heat/ac control. That Town Car is gorgeous too, and for a great price.

I suspect that since these cars are great, and last a while, etc... That Lincoln made sure that the parts are not available, or available at insane prices to discourage people from buying used cars and go straight to new. These idiots need to realize that there are a lot of people out there that never buy new, like me. What do they take me for? A fool?

I would never spend $15,000 or more on a car. Never. Not even if I was a millionaire. It's called common sense.

Hi Erick

I understand your frustration with this situation. 600 dollars for a new unit is insane even 400 is too much. If I had one of those units that was decent, I would price it at 50.00, no more no less. I sold a unit a while back that only has one button broken. The customer was quite happy with it since all his were broken out. The unit I have now has been siting on a shelf in my office for a year or so. I see it every day, and think I wish I could find A repair kit since the unit works just fine. The jb weld idea sounds like a good one. Just the lighted feature and the lettering would be gone.

These days every one I know is in a bind over money. Here in Ky it's especially bad, the economy is in the toilet. I no longer can afford to sell used cars, because I can't give them away. We are talking about decent running good looking cars in the 500 to 900 range, and I can't sell them. Back in Detroit I could sell them in that range all day long. I'm semi retired and on a fixed income, so I hear ya buying a new car is out of the question. We just paid off our last new car a 2003 Sable. Now days we have several older models in the fleet. If I need a newer model, there is always the auction where I can get a rebuilder for a fraction of the price.

Hi Mike,

I'm with you on the economy. We're really feeling it here in Indiana as well. :( I hope things change very soon. It's truly amazing how you elect someone, and that one person can really ruin things for the rest of us. :(

I sent you a PM with a couple quick questions about the unit you've got sitting on your shelf. :)

Update:

I finally got really lucky on ebay, and got myself the right updated heater/ac control. I snagged it at $70 dollars, because I contacted the seller directly and made the offer.

I saw an original beaten up unit sell for $130 or so on ebay 2 weeks ago. The buttons on that unit were broken. The one I got is the $600 dollar new button unit sold by the Dealership to replace the POS soft button units.

For those that are interested: The F5PF-18C612-ABSR (green) (newer hard button) heater control unit is compatiable with the F4VH-19c933-AA (white) (original POS soft button unit) heater control unit.

kitt1993, I don't understand your post. He said he got a good, updated one for $70. Why go searching junk yards? Doesn't make sense to me. (Of course I'm quite thick skulled.) :-)

Stan,

I was wondering the same thing. :)

But, I am very appreciative for the thought, though. Thank you, B. (Kitt1993). I am all set for the climate control unit. I posted the above update for other members' benefit.

Kitt,

Hey, I really do appreciate the thought. I've misread some posts myself in the past. I honestly wasn't trying to make a negative comment. I apologize if it seemed otherwise. I am just blunt by nature.

So, with respect, I quote myself:
