Im looking at buying a ranger but I cant decide which engine is better. How much worse mileage does the 4.0 get?? Which engine would last longer and be more reliable? Thanks alot

My previous Ranger was a '94 3.0L. I now have a '99 Ranger with 4.0L. As far as reliability, both were as good as any American or Japanese made pickups. I would recommend however to opt for the 4.0L engine. The 3.0L just did not have enough ompf for my needs. Of course nothing is free lunch. More HP equates to decreased gas mileage. The bottom line is pick out a type that will make you happy.

It also depends on which 4.0 you're talking about the ohv or the sohc. I've owned a exolorer with an ohv and my current one has a sohc. I like the sohc better but I miss the man. trans. in my old one. I owned a 2.3 ranger and have driven a couple of 3.0's. In my opininion I would go with either of the 4.0's and a man. trans.

Unless you really need the power, i would suggest going with the 3.0
oil is up to 120 a barrel and still going up

I've got an '04 auto 3.0L Edge. Mileage is 19-20 MPG Can. gallon.
I'm wishing I had looked for a 4.0L as the 3 is underpowered for me, not that I'm into racing but I'd like a bit more get up and go.
My previous truck was an '01 S-10 4.3L now that puppy would move with just as good if not slightly better milleage.....Mike

from my own experience the milage difference is pretty small between the 3.0 and 4.0, it's all how you drive it. also if concerned about mpg get a manual transmission.

the 3.0 is more on the hp side the 4.0 is on the torque side
