Filters

There seems to be a lot of different opinions on what automotive filters are the best. I use STP brand oil & air filters from AutoZone and I have not had any problems. They appear to be a high quality product at a good price. What is your opinion?

I like to stick with the OEM brand for my vehicles, which in my case is A C Delcos for all my GM vehicles. They rate high in tests and I figure GM spends a lot of money in R&D to have their filters work well with their vehicles, so why not? Trying to save a few extra bucks on a lesser known or quality filter can cost you a lot more later on.

i agree. air filters i try and use a high flow washable filter such as k&n, or if its a beater i use whatever from the store. oil filters i like either k&n or OEM straight from the dealership. fuel filters OEM also. the cost of OEM filters are usually only a few dollars more expensive, and i would gladly pay a few extra dollars for the assurance of quality.

I went to autozone to get some oil, I had extra filters. I noticed thier everyday price was 57 cents cheaper for ac delco then for a fram... and was almost $1.70 cheaper then where I normally get them....I bought the rest on the shelf. (25 minute drive from my house, I wasn't going back....effin $3.59 a gallon gas! :frown: )

there are 3 different makes of filters i carry at the store where i work fram quaker state and our own brand....all three are made by the same company the only difference between them is that they have a different media in them...however if they aren't a special type of filter i.e high milage filters it doesn't matter what make they are they are the same

I use Hastings filters. That's what we stock where I work, so why not? They're the same as Wix and a couple other top-o-the-line brands.

Exactly! I have posted that link in many of my posts over the past couple of years, and think it sheds a lot of light on the quality of filters out there,(especially Fram :eek:) Thanks Curtis for posting that. I was looking for that link i had stored on my computer but you beat me to it. :grinyes:.

my former boss went on a tour of a oil filter plant....fram, quaker, and most of the popular filters were made there....all they did was paint them different and put different media inside, but for the most part they are all the same

Yeah, Russ's site is great.

Personally I like K&N and Mobil 1 for oil filters and K&N or Apex-i for air filters.

my former boss went on a tour of a oil filter plant....fram, quaker, and most of the popular filters were made there....all they did was paint them different and put different media inside, but for the most part they are all the same
But it's the "media" that makes the filter. A lot of the cheaper quality/priced filter use a poorer filtering media, whereas the higher quality ones use a better , more denser material to filter out more and smaller micron particles from the oil.

I think the website is bobistheoilguy.com. They cut open alot of major oil filter brands and found them to be the same with different names on them. Personally, I run purolator oil and fram air filters. They seem to work well for most applications (but I have yet to tear open an engine that has been run until it blows up). I'd assume that most brands at least meet OEM requirements If I were in the market for a CAI, I would run K&N or amsoil air filters.

For stock applications, i wouldn't worry too much. If you're building a race engine, do a bit of reading before selecting a brand.

You must also take into account the decrease in flow rate once the filter reaches a certain density.
