Really need help!!!! Service Engine light came on. Got an obd II code P0744 for my 98 Villager. The trans seems to slip a little at times, but not always. Need to know what to do? Should it go to the dealer or can I take it to someone else. Van has 122,000 miles on it never had problems.

That is a code for the trans. Torque converter I think. It has to go to a reputable trans shop and not really a dealer.

Code P0744: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Intermittent

Here is the P0744 Factory Service Manual explanation:
A/T TCC S/V Function (Lockup)
Decsription: QUOTE from Factory Service Manual

1- This is an OBD-II self diagnostic item and not available in TCM self -Diagnosis.

2- This malfunction will not be dtected while the O/D OFF indictor lamp is indicating another self -diagnosis malfumction.

3- The Malfunction is detected when the A/T does not shift into fourth gear position or the torque converter clutch does not lock up as instructed by the TCM. This is not caused by electrical malfunction (circuits open or shorted) but by the mechanical malfunction such as control valve sticking, improper solenoid valve operation, malfunctioning oil pump or torque converter clutch, etc.

GO TO THE SERVICE MANUAL THREAD AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTION TO GET THE MANUAL. I believe it will help you alot.

How many miles on vehicle?
When was filter and fluid changed last?
If you are going to change fluid and filter maybe try some SEAFOAM Tansmission conditioner, follow directions and warm up and drive and then do a flter and fluid change.

You may want to take it someplace that has a transmission capble scanner that can read all the vlaues of the tranny.

Good Luck
