Please help with my civic

My civic 91 probably STD from what I've been reading the thread. Anyway, the engine got over heat on the highway then won't start again. The machanic said need to replace the new head gasket so I went to brought the new set of head gasket. He put it back in and called in couple days later said the cylinder was bad not enough pressure to make the car start. Need to get the new engine, is that right?? Also said the car hard to start but when it start there's no problem at all until turn of the car. And will have problem again when you want to start.

I would like to know:
1. What other types of engine will fit directly with this one? I believe it D15A or B not really remember. I want to get the bigger like 1.7 vtec if possible.
And what other stuff I need and about how much?
2. The car come with 4 speeds, how much does it cost to get the 5 speeds tranny and install.
3. How much would it cost to do the whole thing. I mean the engine swap and the tranny.
4. Is it worth to fix this car this day? Or just buy a new one?
5. Anyone live in Fort Worth, TX can give me a suggestion where to do all this cheap?

Well if your going to have a shop do it, expect to pay around 1000 for another stock simple d series. Maybe Ami the shop owner can chime on. Basically any d series engine (d16a6, d15b1/2 etc etc) will bolt right into your car. But to be a simple swap your looking for a d15b2 or b1. With some wiring you'll be able ot run many different engines like the d16a6, or even convert to OBD-1 and run things like d16z6 or d16y8. If your looking at going to a b series engine then your going to need things like engine mounts and shift linkages..axles, a little more wiring and some other parts. Its going to cost more. the 1.7 liter you mentioned is the b17a. And will be hard to find, it only came in the 92-93 integra gsr. Your going to have a much easier time getting a hold of a b16a, or a b18a or b18b. You can do your own searching for how to get these and there are literally HUNDREDS of swap guides that will help you choose, and even do the swap.

the car is worth fixing...granted the body is in decent shape...IMO until you figure out what you want and learn enough about your car, i'd do a stock replacement...those can be had for about $200 or free, that way you could be driving your car

Allways buy metal head gaskets,never trust paper with copper rings attached if you want it to last.I know an Accord right now with 230,000 on original head gasket and timing belt,but its a ticking time bomb I'm sure.

Yes they do make a d17, your correct/ but unless you tune the ecu and convert it to obd1 you wont be able to run it because of the returnless fuel system on the d17 intake manifold. its also obd2. A stock obd1 ecu wont be able ot run a d17 because of the larger displacement, itll run like ass.

I thought I remembered some type of headache from them, just couldn't remember what it was because they have never interested me. I've never been a big believer in more displacement...Hondas don't need a lot to get the job done.
