i have a 2002 oldsmobile alero 3.4l v-6 and im having an problem every once in a while getting this car to start. i get in, turn the key and nothing happens. the engine does turn over, the starters not engaging and the security light just flashes. i've checked the battery, the neutral safety switch, the starter, the starter relay, etc. it happens every once in a while and i have to let the car sit for a couple hours before it will crank again. cold starts, warm starts, it doesnt matter. i'll here the fuel pump prime the line, the dash lights up just fine, and car just wont start!! its as if the shifter is not in park or nuetral. the dash goes blank when im actually turning the key to the start position and the only thing that stays on is the security light. not even a click or anything. thanks in advance for any help.

well its 3.4l.........anyways u need to do the passlock bypass. turn the key to on position without starting it leave it to on until security light flashes and then turn to off then immediately try to start it. it should work. if not repeat 2 more times.

yeah, someone else told me to do the same thing. didnt work. maybe the receiver in the ignition key cylinder lock thats supposed to pick up the keys signal is bad?? just something the dealer ship suggested. is there any way to manually bypass the security system as far as cutting or splicing wires or something?? something to close the loop permanently so the it wont rely on the keys signal to work.

I haven't tried this, but have read several of the posts of people who have and say that it works. Here's what one member posted:
Here is a permanent fix to the stupid Passlock issue: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...asslock+bypass
I did this to my Alero about 8 months ago, and have had zero starting problems since then. Also, it's nice to not have the security light on all the time.
The soldering procedure is not as hard as it sounds. The entire job took me about an hour, and I was going slow just to be sure not to screw something up. I think the resistors ended up costing about $2 at Radio Shack.

I have had problems for over a year with starting my 2002 Alero & have had it towed numerous times, only to be told later that it started fine for the mechanic.
I have finally solved the mystery & you will be amazed at how simple (and inexpensive!) the solution turns out to be.
Simply detach your car key from all other keys. That's it! For some reason, having additional keys attached somehow interferes with ignition.
This also explains why the damn car would always start for the mechanics--I only left them the single key! (I'd begun to think that the towing process somehow fixed the problem...)
So, give it a try! I sincerely hope that this trick works for all you frustrated Alero owners out there--

i just cut the yellow wire and disabled my security ligh for now, but if and when the time comes when i might have this problem again, say from a dead battery or something, i'll give your trick a try. thanks for the info.
