2000 civic shifter locked up

Hi, have 2000 civic and my gear shifter locked up. I use a pen to unlock it, BUT, a little concerned about safety and need some advice on how to fix it and the estimated time. thanks in advance

check your brake light switch located on the top of the foot brake little switch when you press brake the switch is activated and releases the shifter
