I have a '91 Cutlass Ciera S with the 3300 V6 engine. It's been burning coolant for a couple of years, from the smell of the exhaust and the steam coming out, but still would run fine. The smell and performance are worse when the weather is cold, and the first 5 minutes the car is running. The "Check Engine" light would normally come on at these times, and infrequently while driving, and would then turn off.
A month ago the car started to die when you came to a stop after driving at freeway speeds. It would start right back up, but die as soon as it was put into drive. We thought it might be a head gasket, but we got it all torn apart and the head gaskets both look great. One cylinder may not have been firing, as it does not have the build-up of the other 5. There doesn't appear to be any water in the oil. The water pump, radiator, thermostat, fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires have all been changed in about the last year. I've been reading on here about a couple of things it might be, such as the coil packs, crank sensor, MAP sensor, or coolant temp sensor. Can anyone give me some direction on what to do and try? Thanks.
