Trunk wont stay closed

The trunk on my 96 Cavalier is hard to close. It acts like the latch won't latch. we have pulled the bar the latch attaches up and while that worked for awhile it is no longer working. The latch bar looks worn. I can close the trunk but one bump on the road and it opens.
Any help will be appreciated.
