Possible steering or tie-rod problem?

Hello,
I have a Focus Zx3, 2003 and for last few weeks or so, I would hear a knocking sound every once and a while when I would go around corners at low speeds - it was slight enough that I questioned if I was just imagining it.

Today it is now making a squeaking noise / knocking every time I go over a bump or turn at low speeds. It seems to be coming from the left front.

What do you think it is?

If it is a tie-rod end, how long do I to replace it?

Thanks!

The common problems with noise on the front of Focus models are...........

Broken coil springs (may be under warranty if broken)
Work swaybar link pins.
Strut bearings.

I would get it to a shop for a proper diagnosis.

It seems like repair shops including Ford dealers struggle with diagnosing front end noises correctly. I'm a member at www.focaljet.com (http://www.focaljet.com). search for clunk there and you'll get lots of information most of which will lead you to these. In no particular order:

1. Top strut nut
2. Lower strut mount blot
3. Strut bearing
4. Sway bar link ends
5. Motor mount
6. Tie rod ends

On a side note, I have a 2001 ZX3 that just started making a clunking noise from somewhere in the front. I put the front end up on jacks and gave everthing a good shake. No excessive play in any to the components. Link ends were good. Tranny mount (dog bone) was good. I'm leaning towards strut bearing.
