How to check the automatic transmission fluid

How do I check the automatic transmission fluid in my 03 new beetle? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

There is no dipstick - just a fill plug on the side of the transmission - you are supposed to get the engine oil to a certain temp then fill tilll it overflows - put in simple terms it ain't designed for the fixer to do. But, if no leaks why worry??.
