1996 2.0L SOHC
Had quit running several doven times while driving at speed. Would restart in about 5 mins. each time. The check engine light code it produded was 11 (loss of crank or cam position sensor signal). I replaced both the cam and crank position sensors (and the !@#$ connectors) The problems continued. I found that if i loosend the 4 cam sensor bolts even slightly the car would quit running. I removed the cam sensor and took out the cicular magnetic piece from the end of the camshaft that the sensor reads. I added about .02" of gasket material siliconed to the back of the cicular magnetic piece and put it back into place. Thus bringing the magnet about .02" closer to the sensor . The car runs fine ever since (1 month). I think the cam shaft has worn enough to randomly migrate away from the sensor while its running. Wierd! the car only has 235k miles. If anyone else trys this be sure to mark the cam and magnet before you remove the screw that holds it in.
p.s. I have 1 each original cam and crank sensor for sale (for original style connector)

hey fishare, would it randomly cut out? and if it would, would the spark not ignite+fuel not come out?
my car is sort of doing that... it cuts out, and it doesnt want to turn on..til it sits or moves for a bit..its really weird. everything goes out, we're thinking its the ECU..cuz even the SPEDO doesnt work when it dies....when the speedo starts working also, then then car will restart..?

Yes it did cut out randomly. Sometimes for just a second and other times for 5min of so. Each time this occured while driving at speed the tach would imedeatly jump to 0 despite the fact that the engine was still turning. My spedo did not seem affected by this and kept working while the car was coasting.

my car was doing the same thing. it started out where it would crank longer to start then would start sputter and die then it wouldnt start for a bit. my gauges would go wacky and everything. Turned out that my valve cover gasket was leaking oil and it got into some of the sensor plugs behind my engine. cleaned out the oil and replaced the gasket and its been working perfectly for almost 8k miles.
