Wheel size question?

I hope someone will know this! I am looking to go with a bigger tire to make my Passport look more offroady than with the 225/70/16's. I need to know if a 15" wheel will fit on a 96 Passport 4X4 the originals are 16". I want to put a 31x10.5x15. If the 15" will fit I would save about $100 but if not I will have to get the 265/70/16 and will have to be ordered. Thanks for any quick help!

What's the back spacing, hub opening size of the 15" wheel?

You could go to a bigger tire then the 31x10.5 or even the 265/70.

I'm running 32" tires on my truck, 265/75R16, makes a big difference on the 1st generation trucks.

Here's a before picture with 31" tires and oem 16x6 wheels, and a current picture with 16x8 wheels and 32" tires....big difference in appearance, handling much improved, and gives additional clearance.

FYI - 32" tires can be ran without a lift or trimming, I only lifted mine cause I wanted something to do.

Boy you just made it even harder for me to choose! I have an appointment today to have some new wheels and tires put on. I was hoping to use the 15 inch because they were cheaper but I didn't know if I would have caliper clearance. I also was trying to keep the weight down but I ultimately want to use what ever looks the best. I just hated when they told me that most wheels that I like there in 16" had to be ordered. Thanks for the pics! I will post pictures with what I go with.

FYI..15" wheels WILL fit on the Passport! The bad news was the offsets on all the wheels they had in stock were WAY off! The first ones we tried stuck out 3 1/2 inches from outside the fenders. They ordered ones they think will work so we will see on Friday. By the way Ramblin Fever, what offsets are right for these trucks and dont look stupid by sticking to far out?

Honestly, I wish mine stuck out just a tad more then they do.

But I had the same problem with 15" wheels that I tried too, they stuck out too far and looked ridiculous.

Well everything went great, 15" wheels look good under the Passort. I went with 31x10.5x15's. Here are some pics if I can get the pics to post.

Nice....what size tires? What'd those rims run you?

Nevermind....just re-read your post on the 31" tires. What size of rims?

The rims were $110 a piece and the tires are 31x10.5x15. The total was $1125, I think it was a good deal.

Not too bad, a couple hundred more then what I paid for my 16" wheels and tires, but I got the wheels on sale thru Discount tire. I had already had the Yok's about 1.5yrs before I got the rims, they were $125/tire then, a lot cheaper then the BFG's.

They would probably get me another winter, but they are dry-rotting terribly, 2 of them are anyways...seriously contemplating Destination M/T's and having them siped as the next set. I'll run these out through the summer though, as my Dodge diesel needs new tires probably sooner.

Your hood looks like my roof did on my '91 Black Rodeo, Isuzu had a run of bad black paint. They completely repainted the entire truck at my time of purchase when the truck was bought with 8k miles, but they never repainted the roof. It started peeling 5yrs after we bought it, even with having been waxed 3-4 times a year.

Yea that paint is really bad. I want have it top and hood repainted but that would make the rest look bad. I dont want to pay to have the whole thing painted because then I wont want to take it offroading. I will have decide on what I want to do. I still have to do a clutch and cv axles before worring about paint. This has been a good/decent truck. I just had the whole coolant system reworked because it was leaking coolant under the intake between the heads. It has 143,000 and going strong! Thanks for all the help this site has provided!

Look like you paid around the same that I did for the bfgs. I was afraid to ask cuz if you got them cheaper I would have been mad LOL.

The black paint on 2nd gens isnt all that great either. The paint is cracking (small x shaped cracks) all over mine. Looks like crap. And I see the one the guy at work just bought (black 2000) is starting to do it too. Read on the planet that the black paint reacts with the primer and causes it. Have to strip the whole truck to bare metal before repainting.

I'm the same way about painting as you. Would like to get it fixed but I know I'll just scratch the crap out of it offroading so cant bring myself to do it.

To those of you running aftermarket wheels, what backspacing did you get. I've been looking at the US Wheel Daytona and the Cragar Soft 8 in 16x8, just not sure what backspacing to order.

Thanks

My wheels have 3.75" backspace. The stock wheels on mine were around 5-5.25" backspace so these stick out a bit further and give it a nice stance. But I'm also running tires which are 2" taller and wider now so gives it an even wider stance.

Stock rims w/ 30x9.50-15 tires..

Aftermarket 15x8 3.75" back space rims w/ 32x11.50-15 tires..
