Jetta 99 GL 2.0L Transmition Stick Problem

Hey guys my jetta is a 99 GL 2.0L and as i was on as stop light i was on "N" then when turned green and as i was just about shift to the first gear, as i pushed my stick up it clicked and got loose just as it jsut ripped outta the car its just wobeling back and forth like there is nothing thats holding it. And my car was stuck on 3rd gear and still is. i can shift gears from the engine when i pop the hood and as i put it in some gear from the engine the stick inside moves to that gear that i shifted from the engine so my question is why cant i shift from the inside and what do you think my problem is. Thanks to who ever solves this please help out and tell me i dont need a new transmition.
