was looking at buying a 1990 sentra and was supposed to pay for it tomorrow but when I seen him today he said there was something wrong with the tranny. When I drove it it wasn't shifting at all. it is an automatic. It didn't matter if you had it in drive, first, or second. is there some type of limp mode on these cars? I am not used to this preticular car so I don't know. I will be going over tomorrow to look closer at it in the light. It was dark when I drove it today. If anybody has any idea on what it might be please help me. the quicker the better. thanks alot

curtis

edit: it is stuck in first gear.

the new sentras do have a "limp mode" but I'm 90% sure the old models, especially the 1990 does not. Chances are it is a transmission problem

it has 203,000 miles. the moter runs good so i think it has been taken care of pretty good.

Correct, the B12's don't have a so-called "limp-mode" Your tranny is fried. Odds are the solenoid that changes gears is bad.

where is the transmission selinoid and is there a way to test it. is it hard and expensive to replace?

I really can't tell you. My Sentra was a 4 speed manual. Your best bet is finding another tranny or rebuilding that one. Something is telling me that the clutch bands went out, which results in a tranny rebuild. So either way, your going to have to get another one or rebuild that one.

yeah that started to happen with my B12

i just think that it's a real bad solenoid problem , but it only hapens, when the car doesn't idle for a long time after it gets started, and it improves with warm weather, have you tried to manipulate the throttle or actually a more radical method of shifting from 1st to 2nd and then to drive? that sometimes works

i'm sure that you can find the tranny at a decent price if you need to, these cars are pretty sturdy if they're kept in good condition

hope that you have some luck with the Sentra
