Alternator problem?

I'm having a problem with my '98 626 (v-6).
When the alt is 'under load' the engine slows down much more than it should and may be causing the belt to squeal - could this be caused by some problem with the alternator itself?
If I have the a/c turned on the belt squeals like crazy. Sometimes if I'm on the freeway I can turn on the a/c and it's OK, as if the higher revs help somehow. I've also noticed (when idling, or at fairly low revs) the engine slows down considerably when I engage any extraneous electrical equipment, such as headlamps or electric windows, or the a/c system. Combinations of these produce more dramatic slows.
I've tightened the belt down as much as I dare, so that doesn't seem to be the solution.

I did get it to stop squealing but all i can say is tighten it. I know thats what you've done but that was my solution. I drove it for a while with the new belt before tightening again.....
