car scared the crap out of me

1996 2.4 engine.i was driving down the highway and the car accerated by itself and when i tried to apply the brakes i could not push the brake petal down except for maybe 1/4 of an inch using all my weight.has anyone had this problem????

YIKES!!! Often this is due to a weak/broken motor mount. This is VERY dangerous since it could lead to sudden acceleration when cornering.

Also, problems with the Idle Air Control *could* cause engine surge.
