I have a stock 87 brougham classic (runs like a champ). I want posi and have found a few that are 12 and 10 bolt. Some out of the same year camaros and out of older trucks and novas. I was wondering if i needed a leaf or a spring coil rear end for this model of caprice. Any inputs welcome thanks.:smokin:

The only axle that bolts in is for a B-body and they're all 10 bolt. Forget about F-body (Camaro) or other rear axles, they won't fit.
It's a coil spring setup. The 10 bolt is an amazingly tough axle/rear end if you get the 8.5" version.
You may swap your 7.5" axle for an 8.5" axle but remember that you will need to shorten your driveshaft 1", or obtain the driveshaft from the donor vehicle as long as both vehicles have the same transmission type (700R4/4L60/E, or TH2004R, TH350/3L60 etc).
My car being a 1988 is now equipped with a rear end from a '94, for the disc brakes. You will also need to be mindful of wheel bolt patterns (5 on 4.75" bolt circle, 5 on 5 etc).
Any B-body rear axle from 1977-1996 is more or less a direct bolt-in for your car. B-bodies are Caprice/Impala, Bonneville, Parisienne, Electra, Delta 88 etc.

Excluding wagons. They should probably bolt in place. However, the track width is wider. Not that they won't work. But you'd probably need new wheels with different backspacing to compensate.

I tried some local junkyards and no luck finding the right rear end. Does anyone have any other ideas for obtaining one for around 250 or less?

Where are you at?
On the West Coast and including Arizona, there's a chain of you-pull-it yards called Ecology Auto Wrecking. I got my '94 rear disc setup for $129 axle to axle.

There is always the option of a posi carrier for your existing axle, but putting money into a 7½" 10-bolt may not be cost effective. A 9-bolt (Borg-Warner) could be converted to fit the B-car, but those are as rare as an intelligent politician.

it is very difficult to find a b body posi rear and even when you do it will be a gov lok in which are total garbage
find a 9C1 or 9C6 caprice or impala posi rear, at least it will be an 8.5 one
wagon rears wont bolt under the sedans and coupes BTW

Yeah, I didn't even think of the wagons. Now I know in case I ever look at one as a donor for a sedan.

I know I've said this before, but that is AMAZINGLY, SHOCKINGLY CHEAP! Over the years I've went to a total of 9 different junk yards around here many times for different parts. The very, VERY cheapest I could find was strictly the axle only and for $250.00. Others wanted anywhere from $300.00 to over $500.00. So I gave up for the time being. I have relatives in Arizona, next time I head down there, I'm raiding the yards with pockets full of cash.

There are two junkyards out here that have those prices (and a whole crapload that are expensive) - one is Ecology over on 27th avenue and Lincoln St. in Phoenix, and the other is Pick-n-Pull on 56th st between Ray and Chandler Blvd in Chandler. Either one gives insane deals. I've bought a low-mileage TH700R4 at the Chandler one for $99 complete with torque converter (this is in my car now, going on 2 years), hoods, doors and bumpers at Ecology and pick'n'pull for $28/ea (no matter the car), the aforementioned drive axle and they'll even sell you a turn-key LT1 for $150 - you pull it. Driveshaft, $10. Nearly-new condition bucket seats from a '97 Grand Am (in 2002), $25 each.
The trouble is, everyone knows what to look for and if you see one such car, you have to get it NOW or it's gone.

Man I almost want to just move there for a year, visiting the yards on a weekly basis collecting parts. Around here rust free doors (or any body parts) are a rare find on any car, so finding one under $100.00 is kinda tough.

Good news found the right rear end, bad news my LS got crushed by a bus and its pretty much totaled. Ive already found a bunch of caprices with posi already now im just deciding if i want another brougham, or this landau or maybe this clean white glasshouse:iceslolan. Decisions, decisions.

Maybe the 80s stuff was gov-lock but the 90s stuff was Auburn, still not great but better than a gov-lock.
I would frankly discourage anyone from buying a rearend because it is posi, a junkyard posi should be assumed worn out, if it works consider that lucky.
I have bought two junkyard axles complete with brakes and such $125 removed for one and $150+$50 removal for the other which was a disc 9C1 rear. Another local yard thinks it's 9C1 axle is made of gold and wants a good bit more because it is "posi and disc" idiot is stuck in the 60s as if disc is freakishly rare. A freiend would have bought it 2 years ago at $200 but the guys just keeps letting it rot and wont budge on price.
