over heating, well almost

this question is out of curiousity....today i jus did an oil change and i over filled it by about a cm on the dip stick. i took it for a drive (5km maybe) and when i got back i realized that the engine bay was intensly hot inside, i couldnt touch any of the rad hoses, and i white smoke comin out the exsaust ( i have a hollowed out cat) anywayz i just want to know if all that was caused by over filling the engine. oh and i guess its worth noting that when ever i stopped at an intersection the heat gauge would climb but whne i took off again it would resume back to normal.

hm now that i think about it i also mounted my licence plate infront of the rad but thats all i can think of..


btw its a 91 cd hatch cx 1.5l

White smoke would be coolant. Could also just be condensation in the exhaust before startup..but if you let it sit and then stomp the throttle a cloud will come out and itll shoot some water more than likely if the gasket is gone. Also chekc your coolant to see if there is oil in it, and vice versa.

hm well the white smoke has only been around since i got rid of the catillac converter and its not thick its jus always trickling out. no clouds when i takeoff, and when ya really stomp down on the gas, i get black smoke (when i hit the rev limiter, not that i have in a long time or think that its cool to do that i jus have stupid drunk friends that try to drive it).

there aren't and bubbles under the rad cap while its running and i cant smell oil/gas in the rad fluid.

the car runs great idles nice and smooth never misses a beat its just over heating.

i have one other question out of curiosity what happends whne you really over fill your oil. must be a bad thing

It comes out seals etc because it over pressurizes. And it could also whip it into a froth. The overheating could have to do with the headgasket too. You should do a compression check.

depending on the mileage it will change, but id say over 140. REALLY, your looking to make sure that they are all within like 10 psi of each other.

if you get something like 170 172 145 176 then you have a problem.

well that went bad lol. i got starting from the driver side 110, 170, 140, 120, so now i realize this problem i have to ask can i get away with just replacing the head gasket or should i order more stuff also this is the reason the car is over heating right?

I would start with the gasket, its the most likely candidate, could also be valve seals or broken valves..but that usually happens in just one cylinder. But youll see once you get the head off. Youll probably see the break in the gasket and wheres its leakin if thats the case.

Helms service manual will do it. you can find them for download by searching google.

Since you will need the torque specs and tightening pattern to do it right.
