On a swedish forum, scaleracers, there is a tutorial in how to paint flames by Roger Nordhagen.
He wanted to donate the body in a contest and now we have about five of us competing for that body.

This is what it looks like at the moment with some clear coats going on.

My contribution is this tricked out '59 chassi with a 60's interior.
Engine, front seats, tires and brakes is from Monograms ZR-1 Corvette.
Chrome T's that was narrowed a tad up front and left untouched at the back.
Suspension lowered all around.

Engine has got the blower assembly from the Revell Pro Street Lincoln and because of that the whole package got moved backward quite a bit.

Tuck 'n' roll made with styrene stock on the front and back seats with copper wire as piping, steering wheel scratchbuilt with copper wire, styrene stock and an old steering wheel all painted alclad chrome with candy red.

Floor is made out of a tissue painted with acrylic grey.

Enough rambling about, here's the progress so far. Think I'll manage to finish it in about a week or so...

Still needs some detailing both under the bonnet and interior but I'll get her up and running in time.....I think!?

Looks like one HOT Chevy indeed! Any chance of some shots of the flames up close? I'm not fond of how thick the tuck and roll makes the seats, but you did a great job, and it looks believable for the most part. I can't wait to see what it looks like with the clear all polished up, and body on the chassis.

Ignition wires are there, just have to get some paint on them as I make them out of copper wire. A thin brush and that's taken care of.

Also made me a large tach from an old antenna, a piece of copper wire (again!), some thick aluminium foil, a small piece of styrene stock, a print from the ink-jet and epoxi to wrap it all up.
Looks ok irl, but a picture like this is kind of reveling.

Has to get it finished by next weekend because that's when it's going to be decided who's the winner. I think I have a fair chance to take it home but we'll have to wait and see.
If it's not going my way I have a 1960 Impala body to wrap it up with and a new airbrush to play with so there maybe will be something like Rogers paint job eventually.

Thank's guys!

This is what the body looks like when polished out, pretty good I think! Haven't seen it in real life.

...and for some reason all the judges at the contest gave me their vote. So now I'm waiting for the body above to arrive in my mailbox some time in a week or two. Roger is up over his head with work so it may take some time.
I'm as happy as can be to get such a nice paintwork on a car, Roger is one of those guys always taking home a load of trophys from the shows.

I'll get back on the build as soon as it's finished with more and better pictures.

Thank's!

Sure did win the contest, kind of small though.
There was five entries but only me and Rat-rod finished our builds and Roger told me that all judges had mine as their favourits. It was only a matter of me getting it finished in time, he said that he could have announced the winner a week ago!?
Rat-rod made one heck of a nice combo but he lost because of an almost box-stock build compared to my quite extensive rebuild.
Nevertheless, I'm honored to get this body in my collection.

On an early basis I realized that there would be trouble getting everything lined up properly. A first quick test gave that there was going to be some cutting and grinding to get i together in a nice fashion.

So far I cut off a piece from the body behind the grill, 1-1.5 mm around the interior and a good portion from the dashboards front.
With this done it was possible to get everything up underneath the body. Has to take away a little more from the dash in order to fit the front window.

Some quick shots of how it's going to look.

Think I'll omit the front bumper in ordet to expose as much as possible of Rogers paintwork. Looks kind of mean without it to!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/proosen/Work%20in%20progress/1959%20Impala%20Nordhagen%20edition/ntligenhemma011_redigerad.jpg

A bit frustrating to not do things properly the first time, the exhaust is almost laying on the ground. Have to re-route it from the mufflers and back to get up tighter under the chassi.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/proosen/Work%20in%20progress/1959%20Impala%20Nordhagen%20edition/ntligenhemma012_redigerad.jpg

Roger even made some flames underneath the bonnet, cool trick I think. He didn't show that while he was painting so I only realized it when I got it home.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/proosen/Work%20in%20progress/1959%20Impala%20Nordhagen%20edition/ntligenhemma017_redigerad.jpg

During all dry-fitting I managed to spoil some of the chrome trim so I will try to replace it. It'll be exciting to do as Roger put the foil on before the clear coats but I think with some really sharp tools and a bucket of patience it'll be fine.

'Til next time.
Niclas
