alright... so i am currently replacing the whole front clip on the civic, so i had to take my daily out for this weekend's fun.... its a 94 supreme sl.... shaved heads, lowered valve covers, and a new cam, so it had a bit more than stock....
on cleveland racing, about 70 of us caim up with the idea of meeting up at one of the local racing spots, about 10:30.... me and my buddy who was driving his 2000 3.8L stang with I/H/E, decided he would head out with me.... about a 1/2 hour after we all showed up, the manager at the steak and shake parking lot we were at, called the cops.... moving down the road about 10 mins at 110mph.... fun fun fun....
after the group of 90 or so of us were able to get regrouped, we chilled for a little, when i spotted a rather nice looking 94 accord ex.... i walked up to the dude, found out he didnt have a radiator in, but was running straight coolant to coolant line, decided he was retarded, and walked away.... i kept looking around when i found a nice civic dx, which i decided i could have some fun with.... asked him to race, the next thing you know we are on the freeway getting ready for a 40mph roll.... the civic honked it down, and i quicked dropped the gas to the floor, i kept walking away till about 115, when my car was at redline, and wasnt shifting anymore... i let off, and saw nothin but my buddy's stang, who was right at my 6... dont know where the civic ended up, but when i got back to where the rest of the group was, he looked kinda pissed.... i walked over and asked what was wrong.... he frustratiingly replied " i F****ing just got beat by a olds!!!!!" about 20 people laughed, and the guy calmly drove away.... i yelled at my buddy in the stang, and we decided to call it a night.... we got back on the highway, where we did a 40- 100 pull, in which the stang got me by about 2 1/2 lengths... i guess that isn't too bad seeing i am driving an auto.....

whats wrong with an auto?

Well.... besides the fact that i can't downshift???? i would much rather have control of the gears.... idk it might just be me but winning a race with an auto tranny is like kissing your step sister: you really like it, but its just not right.....

ok that was an awful image that i really didnt need right now. But a good comparison none the less. I prefer to decide when to upshift and downshift instead of having a computer decide when it damn well pleases to shift for me. I like to control my car thank you very much.

Its really just preference, though launching in an auto is a hell of alot easier than a manual. But if you get the manual launch down, you will kick the crap out of an auto of the same car, and often even if they have more power.

and i would have laughed watching the civic get beat by a cutlass :D Rumor going around here that a modded 99' SS camaro got beat by a 94' Accord EX... Camaro guy wasnt happy :)

on the highway a manual would have the advantage but from a stop it can be a different story. saying a car is faster because its a manual and can launch harder is dumb. if someone can launch a manual perfect i promise a car with a stall set for its mods will still jump of the line harder than the manual. also the computer shifting my car shifts faster and more precise than a person could do. i drive a 5 speed vr6 jetta also alot of it is preference but comparing it to kissing your step sister is off.

yeah personally i want a manual but if im concerned about acceleration at all costs then ill get a good auto

I just like the feeling of shifting it myself. it "feels" faster for some reason. Like i said, its all preference. Auto just seems like cheating in my opinion :) but if the car only comes in auto then hey, whatever fills your bucket. I am not bashing auto vehicles here, just stating my opinion.

And when you say when your car was at redline and not shifting anymore, does that mean you hit the electric governor or your car was utterly topped out?

oh dude... it was toppped offf...... i had the speedo maxed out and then some.... the speedo read 115, but i still had pull after that.... i would say i ended about 120ish.... there is no electric control for to speed, well, at least by law nessarily on any car built before 2000

haha thats sick. did it take its sweet time getting there? I can max my Honda out at the end of the speedometer, which is 130. But it takes a good minute and a half to get there :D

manual, auto, it is all just whatever you intend the car for and whatever you are capable of.

manuals are good for taking around a track or autox since you can downshift, heel-toe, and power out of a corner much more effectively with a lot of practice... i mean ... A LOT of practice.

autos are good for daily's and drag racing, and for people with only one leg and one arm. for all intensive purposes, automatic transmissions are designed to muliply torque off of the line, so theoretically they should be better for drag racing and launching, at least in mitsu's case the opposite is true.

Ridden in my buddy's Dodge Stealth. That thing's original transmission was awful... it would not run the same from one day to the next. sketchy at best.

hooah for mitsubishi :)

yea... mzr: the thing picked up speed relatively quick... i was able to get on the freeway, and in about 1 1/2-2 miles, i had maxed it out.... as for the drag racing perspective, i still dont know... an auto will let your rpms drop alot farther than a manual will..... on most cars, this will take your farther away from your point of highest horse power....

Your right alot of autos drop to lower rpms than a manual. Some cars have slugey auto trannies that rob power, shift slower, and drop to low rpms. But you have some cars that have a good transmission that shifts quickley and firmley. Just normal driving in my car you can tell the difference in my transmission than a slugey one. My car breaks loose into second at 40mph because how fast it shifts.

You have a 4 speed tho, which is another disadvantage of autos, however this doesn't apply for the most part today because companies are putting 5-6 speeds in most automobiles. I think lexus has about 14 gears now...

The Eclipse in TF&TF had a prototype 14 gear Lexus transmission.

How does that put me at a disadvantage?

the more gears with the same final drive ratio will mean that your gears are closer, and that it will keep you in a smaller RPM range which is hopefully ideal. Granted, if you have a lot of power and there is no real range, it's just all power, then fewer gears is quicker b/c you don't have to shift, but for us guys without balls out the walls torque, having more gears means we can stay in the hot part of the powerband.

exactly..... lexus is kinda over doing it with the 14 gears, but thats ok....
