Help with security system

I'm the proud new owner of a 1996 Corolla DX, without the owners manual. The alarm goes off each time I unlock and open the door, and will not go off until I turn the ignition to the ON position. Is this normal? Would it be possible for someone to post instructions for using the security system? Thanks for the help. My neighboors will also appreciate the help if it stops the early morning wake up call from my new Corolla's horn.
